Vegan-ism is interesting. Have had a few vegan friends in the past. They're always thin.
A meat loving friend of mine always wonders how vegans manage vitamin wise.

Have you considered being a pescetarian?

I have an over weight veganish bil. He eats lots of junk food like crisps, fried stuff. Dh's best friend is also vegan or vegan ish.he went vegetarianism and I asked why and he said why and I explained the flaws in his plan and he was horrified and went vegan. He is not overweight at all, but is well built with muscle which I think is very impressive, requires good attention to diet. :). ( often people,e who are vegan supplement Lj. )

I don't understand pescetarians. Fish are living creatures as well surely? If you're happy to eat a fish, then why not a free range chicken?

Health reasons, welfare reasons.....a free range line caught fish is generally a higher welfare choice than a farm reared free tangle chook (I eat both).

Reasons of empathy. I spent a long time swimming with fish as a kid, I still find it hard to empathise with them in the way I do other animals...apart from maybe lobsters and crabs. Which are delicious, but I hate seeing live and waiting with bands round their little claws. :(

yeah ok, so how about wild venison? doesn't get much more ethical than eating wild british deer

Maybe it's because animals make noises that humans call voices/talking .... and fish don't

There is very little truely wild British game, most is managed, just in a wider scale. That's because there is almost no wild Britain. :D. Sadly, and tragically IMO. Most is managed, even if with a soft touch. Most free living deer are managed and some animal scientists would argue are really are free living rather than truly wild. I think that's pushing it. 'Our' deer I"d class as wild, they range across owned boundaries and on to a a huge I farmed area. But I believe they are managed up there, to a degree, not in a traditional sense of game keeper. I might be wrong though, not sure tbh.

But yes, its certainly a higher welfare choice than most farmed meat. I absolutely agree. I think most welfare driven refusists would too. Venison is often farmed or managed on estates, And thus is not as free living as 'wild' venison.

Free living is a bit of a tricky one, but its an important divider in animal science. The thing is where the line is drawn has become a bit arguable, or was when I last was caring much, :D

I think its an 'ah' factor too. For example, its much easier to raise money for saving pandas than saving bugs or plants. The truth is if pandas died it would be sad, but if the bugs or plants at the base of a food chain die it could be very seriously catastrophic in many cases...domino effect.....pandas ...well, they are phenomenal bamboo hedge utters and very cute looking , but......not much depends on them in the same way that we know of. It would be interesting to know about host specific parasites etc, but they are rarely that 'useful' to a pyramid structure in the same way as the true core. Bamboo getting out of control and suffocating everything else could be a problem but we have loads of peoe to cut bamboo, and lots of uses for it, and for pandas doing the bamboo control as is. :(

I'm getting thinner! Thougha way to go lemon.

I'm expanding my very at the moment limited repertoire, but can now make vegan cake and very more-ish it is too.

It's only one of the Bs ( B12 I think) that you are likely to be short of on a vegan diet, plenty of protein in a wide variety of non animal food, so I just take a multi vit with a high percentage of Bs in it and leave it at that.

I do love fish, whereas meat I usually didn't eat anyway, but I'm an all or nothing person on the food front!
