On some lines, first also gives you free hot drinks and snacks.

Black coffee can be bought for under seven quid:D

Difference is civility, small bit of space, not sure its worth it. Grumble grumble.

I think I'll save the seven.

It will probably be a quiet train anyway. It you have stick and its busy they stick you in first if there is room any often:o

I went by train, before the storm. Journey was fine, then 2 days later I got a sore throat, then a cold. Now OH has a sore throat. Wish I'd taken the car.

I have just ordered a washing basket from Amazon. Under £4, including delivery - what must delivery cost on something that large?

I need to see this washing basket! I need one for colours...

Probably £2.50 for a coffee. So two coffees and £2 for a less germ ridden ride. I'm not saying there are more germs in 2nd class, just that having more space for yourself reduces the risk.

Wilkinsons/similar will have a choice of cheap ones... or a market. Google shopping shows some starting at £1. Maybe one of those markets that has a plastics stall ...

That's the other option. I could drive up, pay congestion charge park either where DH lives ( which is fine) or at his office, where there is space. But I'll be tired afterwards.

Last time it was a real treat NOT driving home and felt safer. Difference this time is DH is coming home with me, so he could drive. I'm not the worlds most chilled passenger, so I'd probably do the first leg then swap, for his sake:o

Off-Peak Returns. Are these just walk-up tickets, so I don't need to book online?

Yes. It is usually cheaper to book two singles on line if you know what time train you're getting but they usually have to be used on the exact train you book and are not transferable. As others have said you can often get first class tickets for knock down prices by booking online but usually again only if you know in advance which trains you're getting.

I usually find that off peak returns are only £1 or even only 50p more expensive than an off peak single bought as a walk up fare. Ludicrous...

My house. Exactly. I have four washing baskets, mainly MIA, a pile of kid's clothes at the top of the stairs to trip over and a pile of muddy building gear to land in at the bottom.

We have shared washing bin for mine and OHs dirty laundry, DD has a laundry bin all to herself.

I so understand the MIA. There is a wicker laundry basket for taking piles of dirty washing to machine or wet washing to line, or dry washing for ironing. There are also two multicoloured collapsable crates which serve as laundry baskets. I think there is a fourth one, a grey plastic laundry basket somewhere. All baskets are often all full of DDs clean but unironed clothes. I like the crates best.
