  • So beautiful!.

I'd gladly swap. Gorgeous rooflines .....I have a thing about rooves.

Looks like a fab place for I to run about too.

Did you harvest lots over the weekend? Is your OH back yet?

He loves it - there are ponds to drown in, trees to fall out of, animals to get kicked by, sharp tools to wave around, it's 8 year old heaven.

OH not back until Wed night .

Here are roofs for you - the bits at the top of the frame, in the attic, which hold the whole thing out. They are from the oldest bit of the house, which is 1320s:

Quote for new short/ medium term heating plan ....with longterm cylinder .....almost twelve k. Plus vat.

It would be cheaper in London/ se. But we are not in London/ se and don't have the benefits of lots of competing contractors.

I have to find a home near me for my mother to buy. I try to tell her to rent first, but she considers that moving twice.

She has a long list of requirements, which are inflexible and contradictory (in terms of what builders build) and she would like to move now, immediately. Sighs!

The property that is most likely to fit the bill is new build, but any new builds are not likely to be ready immediately.

Show homes? They are normally kitted out and in the centre of the development as well.

I am highlighting this because it's the truth. People in London think everything's expensive in London. It's not.

There's only one equivalent thing which is more expensive: housing.

You also get access to expensive things not available elsewhere: e.g. expensive shows and expensive restaurants

But like-for-like most things are cheaper and certainly more readily available in London. Everything from chips and takeaways to food and household goods can be sourced cheaper in London with a little effort.

There's also heaps of free things to have, do, visit in London. So, the cost of living/doing things is cheaper. Not to mention these things actually exist.

    That's me screwed then.

It's practically impossible for any female academic to have children before 35. There is no glass ceiling but try a biological clock ceiling.

Degree completes 21/22 (22 mostly). Spend a year dossing/part time work/masters (you're now 23 and thinking seriously about life)

23-27 (PhD). Takes about 3 years to do the work, another 6 months to write up.

first post doc takes you up to 30-32. If you hit jackpot, you get your full time job here. if not, Second postdoc brings you to 33-35.

Then you get a fellowship (3-5 years).

ALL this is on short fixed term contracts. If you wonder why you don't see many female professors, imagine living your life wondering whether you have another job.

This is the shortened version of an academic. Many people take longer jobs in between degrees as they try to look for funding.
Wrong way of looking at it .... get yourself a hot young man who can see that you've a great career ahead of you ..... and who wants to be a stay at home dad. Then just pop them out at slots in the calendar when it's most convenient.

I loathe TVs or any form of electronics in bedrooms, apart from a kindle.

    Not even battery operated devices?

Clarified for those of you with dirty minds: Like a torch or an electric fly swat
    I think....

    ... repointing......
I've seen people repointing on the telly and moaning about how long it takes - and I've always thought "I'd like to do that, as a job. Just repointing". It appeals to the OCD/Aspie traits in me :)
