You don't buy meraingues. They taste like sawdust.

You make them - it's really, really easy. 2 oz sugar per 1 egg white, and careful not to let any yolk contaminate them.

If you're going to eat them as meringues, then I absolutely agree that the bought ones are travesty of the real thing, and, yes, very much like sawdust. If all you are going to do with them is crumble them up into a mess, then the bought ones will do, IMO.

1 - how do they know?
2 - as the specials said, it doesn't make it alright. Still a shame, & I'm missing my friend...

    Another hug for you. :(

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Indeed. Welcome Yorkie1. Do tell us a bit about yourself. Do you like mushrooms? Are you a scientist and/or a Jew? Do you live in Hertfordshire?

The trick with the NPT is to read at least once a day, preferably more. Otherwise catching up can take a loooong time. I haven't been on here since yesterday morning so will be replying to posts by threes (because that's the max you can multiquote without faffing about) until I get to the end.

    Hi Sue

Well, about myself ... I live in N Yorks although was born and grew up in Hertfordshire (born in Hitchin and moved to Broxbourne near Hertford and Essex).

Funny you should ask about mushrooms. I can't abide them - ever since I read the Babar book as a child in which his father the king eats a bad one, goes green and shivery and then dies

Live alone with an ever-growing pile of yellow courgettes (picked 11 yesterday aaagh)! I also have a very old pack of small meringues in the cupboard for single helpings of Eton Mess ;)

I would also recommend the Greek Islands, or Cyprus to NDG. Lovely sailing waters - I used to have a topper when I was a teenager (Mum bought an old one for with some redundancy money), and had a go on a Catamaran when on a sailing holiday. The mosaics near Paphos in Cyprus are just breathtaking.

I don't travel these days for health reasons but I do think wistfully of those warm, sunny, seaside days many years ago ...

I can't remember ever getting on a cheap flight after about 2pm and it actually being on time. The morning flights are usually ok because there's not been enough time for stuff to go wrong yet. When it does go wrong they're operating on such a shoestring budget that everything falls over; they probably did order a spare crew when it first went wrong but they were just in Alicante or something stupid like that.

I have more or less given up on them - if there is a BA alternative then I fly with them instead even if it's double the price. Usually it isn't actually that much more once they've added on £50 for credit card fees, luggage and oxygen consumption.

At one point the flight was going to stop in Milan, which was probably to pick up a crew as I assume if the plane was fit to fly 3 hours it would be fit to fly 5.

    Hi Yorkie

(Um, I'm Lydia, not Sue. Well, Lydia's not my real name, but that's what I go by on here. There are some similarities between Sue and me, in that we're both single parents, but in other ways we're different. She has an ex who is generally not much use - hence the expressions of surprise at his recent expressions of intention to support her eldest while he's at uni - whereas my divorce was halted in its tracks by my nearly-ex's death in a road accident. Also her three boys are all older than my boy and girl.)

The Herts people will no doubt be glad to get another Herts person on the thread, and it's one up for the mushroom haters. :)

Do we ask if we should refer to you as "he" or "she" or would you prefer not to say? Ages ago, when he was new on the thread, jelly enjoyed keeping us all guessing - although most people were of the opinion he was probably male - until he accidentally referred to leaving his jacket on his chair so that people would think "he's still in the building" and then his secret was out.

I am so sorry to read of the sudden death of your friend, that you miss them is understandable and you have my sympathy.

Any suggestions for nice places to visit when driving to the Isle of Wight? I seem to recall some time back somebody having a nice time over there.

Kavos is the only place in Greece I've been to too. I think I might have also been 21. If I remember correctly, we're not the same age though. Phew.

I was going to say Lemesos (JESC 2008), but that's Cyprus.

The only time I've been to Greece was in 2006, as part of the delegation for Georgia (no singer that year), who joined in 2007. This was in Athens :)

My mum says that kind of thing. She also announces the shortest and longest days as 'well, the nights will draw in/ out from here' etc.

Neither of my parents does this, but my dad draws exact scale drawings of their garden which are accurate to within about 0.01mm using CAD software in order to plan the vegetable beds. On balance I think I would prefer it if be stopped doing that and said annoying things about the amount of sunlight I can expect in the immediate future.
