Fake money out of cashpoint -who will refund money?

Hiya!
I just spoke to my Nan on her mobile - she is in town and got stopped when trying to buy something in a shop for using counterfeit money.
I know at this point that she used a £20 note and it was fake, that she got it from a Sainsburys ATM this morning and the shop (probably quite rightly) refused to give it back. I do not know how ATM's 'work' or if this is a usual occurrence but she obviously wants her money back and at this point I don't know if she's got more fake money.
The store said they were going to phone the police - which they did - but nobody would come out. My Nan tried her bank but put the blame back with Sainsburys.
I just want to know who is at fault here so we can pursue the right people and who should be returning my Nan's money!!
Many thanks for any help!

She needs to inform her own bank and the provider of the cash machine, the cash machine will most likely have a number to call to report any problems.0

Yes, she needs to write to or phone Sainsbury's. Her own bank cannot help, since it wasn't them who physically dispensed the money.urs sinserly,

The problem you will almost certainly experience is how can she prove she obtained the fake note from the cash machine.
Only if other customers also receive fake notes and complain will she have any chance of a refund, I suspect.
Meanwhile, she could still get done for trying to pass counterfeit money, or even just possessing it.
The person at fault is the person who produced the counterfeit note. Good luck in tracing them, let alone trying to obtain any refund from them!0 -
I know I'll get bashed for this but just use it some other place. Somebody else won't notice. Nobody is going to arrest someone for having counterfeit money. 10% of the population probably have counterfeit money in their wallets.0

She only needs to contact sainsburys if the cash machine belongs to sainsburys bank.0 -

She can't - it's been confiscated, and the police alerted
(according to the OP's story)
Btw, did you know 73% of statistics are made up? :cool:0 -

It's because of people like you this is exactly why retailers have to confiscate it!0 -
ATM notes are checked for forgeries before being put in machines.
Nan should have had a receipt for the note - if it is a fake she has lost her money if it is genuine she will get a refund.
The receipt should have her name and address on it.
Was it at the till she was stopped - did they check note with a lamp or pen?0 -
Don't ATMs have cameras in them these days.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
