It was in the news, and I would have thought it was widely known that it wouldn't be compatible.
Widely known by very tech-savvy people, yes.
Apple probably took the view that the information was correct as the only existing 4G network at the time was EE, which it was compatible on.
EE didn't have a 4G network at the time of the iPhone 5's launch; there were no 4G networks in the UK at that time.

    You missed my point.

EVERY news outlet from BBC and Sky to the telegraph and daily mail have noted the fact that the iPhone 5 won't work on O2.

In fact the O2 CEO was attacked in an interview on Sky news for that very reason.

So yes, journalists/average joe don't really know what they're talking about and are complaining for nothing. But it's not just MSE, it's everyone.

Will the iphone 5 work on 3's 4G when its rolled out?

It'll work on Three and EE.

The new iPhone 5s will work on ALL uk networks when it comes out end of next month.

And that will be one of the big selling points, as well with a little bit more power from the processor.

Can't have Apple change to much now :rotfl:

The 5s is going to be quite expensive on contract in the UK when it does launch. At least that's according to what i've heard.

But yeh, the 5s is going to be marketed the crap out of on O2 and Vodafone.

    .

I will have to go back and check, but I'm semi certain EE was launched a day or week before the IP5.
    Yep as suspected
" Further speculation commenced on 7 September 2012 when the company announced details of a press conference on the morning of 11 September 2012, the earliest date set by Ofcom to launch 4G services. The company announced that it would release "exciting information on our new brand and the latest innovation in network technology" on this date.[27] It was also noted that this date was only 24 hours earlier than the expected launch of the latest generation of iPhone (the iPhone 5), thereby arousing suspicion that the new iPhone would support 4G and that Everything Everywhere would launch its service on this widely anticipated handset.["

EE did not provide any 4G services until 30th October 2012, well after the iPhone 5 was launched. At the time the iPhone 5 was launched, there were no 4G services in the UK.

There was an orange / tmobile price promise as well though. Plus everyone knew EE would get the iPhone 5 on 4G

I'm not sure the incompatibility of the iPhone 5 is as big a story as MSE is making it out to be. I know other news outlets have mentioned it, but MSE has actually put it in the headline...

At the back end of last year, Apple's share of the smartphone market had already dropped to 15%. The iPhone 5's half-hearted LTE support shows it clearly isn't intended as a full 4G phone, though I suspect its successor will be. The real 4G heavy-hitters are the Samsung Galaxy S 4, the HTC One, the Sony Experia Z and to a certain extent, the Nokia Lumia 820. I'm sure the majority of 4G early adopters will have chosen one of those. The iPhone is still a good phone, but the current incarnation isn't really a 4G phone, and its inclusion in the headline of an article about 4G networks is a little bizarre.

I know there is a hard core of iPhone users who wouldn't dream of using anything else, but I'm sure they'll be just as happy using the iPhone 5 without 4G until the next one comes along.

Summary: If you want "an iPhone", you'll get one whether it does 4G or not. If you just want "a phone with 4G", you'll probably get one of the others mentioned above. If all you'll settle for is "an iPhone with 4G", you'd be wise to wait until there's an iPhone with better LTE support, else you may find yourself locked into a single network.

Which will probably be announced in the next month or so, if previous years are anything to go by.

Announcement around the second week of September and launch 2 or 3 weeks later.
