On the flip-side, some people can be over-confident when matching the skills they think they have with the requirements of a role which is completely different to anything they have done before. This results in an influx of applications from people who don't stand a chance. Hence the need to request experience of previously working in a similar role. IMO, filters are intended to remove these sorts of applicants but of course some of the wheat is removed with the chaff.

For this reason, if you truly have the skills that do make you the perfect match, then apply for the job with covering letter which explains all of this. If you genuinely have something to offer then your application will be judged on its merits and you will proceed to the next stages. If you don't then you will have lost a little time and perhaps some hope but nothing more.

The only other complication is lack of knowledge of the job on the part of an agency or HR department (resulting in the rigid application of the filtering criteria) which means your application does not get passed on to the person who can properly assess your suitability.

With that I would conclude that you win some, you lose some, but you've got to be in it to win it.

Advisors tell you that must be confident and sell yourself, regardless of whether you can do the job or the skills you have match the job. They're quite happy to force you to apply for the jobs and cause employers to try and be even more specific about what they want and ask for more.

However, in some cases that's all you can do if you have no previous work experience at all.

I've never got anywhere despite the fact I can do the jobs I apply for. Sometimes it's just luck whether you get anywhere.

Yes they say I am over qualified mainly or out of work and then they still cant fill the post.

Why would out of work be a problem??

Have you, out of interest tried to apply for jobs more suitable for your level of qualifications? (sorry if I'm being daft asking this if you have done this).

also I do wonder why they can't fill the post after all what you've said, are they too fussy or something?? You seem a conscientious, nice person who'd be an asset to a workplace, overqualified or no.

    :)

People are quick to judge. Longer you're out of work, the worse it looks even if you've clearly been trying to do something.

I'd say the chances are with many applications they just scan the first page or a couple of sections and if it isn't exactly what they are looking for it goes in the bin. No company can be bothered with going through hundreds of applications, although why they don't give anyone a chance when they ask directly about it, I don't know.

People believe If you have 20 years plus experience and a good CV there could be no reason in the world why you are not working so my 16 years of references and my recommendations on LinkedIn mean nothing at all

These jobs all seems to be at my level. Or they make then out to be. I have never applied for a role saying Junior entry level as I know that would be pointless.

When a company advertise for a 'specialist' I wonder what they were really trying to say when they tell me it was a junior they were looking for or an agency who told me a job paying £33k was a junior role as the job title was Purchase Ledger Assistant!!

I apply for supervisors roles which is what I was at my last job but they never get back or say 'you are not working'

I have been shortlisted for phone interviews where the person was not aware (no idea why not as its on my cv and cover letter) that I was not in work and as soon as they realise they cut the call short!

I'd never lie on my CV/cover letter/applications. Mine is just a factual list of what I have done and can do. I see no point in lying no matter what job it's for.

Only lie if you can 'back it up' otherwise they'll see right through you.

It isn't and look at the trouble people get into. Yet for some reason people still do it...

I wouldn't lie even if I could back it up. That is really why I have such a problem with these silly questions they put on job ads lol.
