I'd be very angry if it was my Blu-ray player, why should it matter if it was a fairly cheap model.

I'd be inclined to contact Head Office by phone and see what they say, much better than writing in my opinion.

Unfortunately one of the things you tend to get with the more expensive models is longer support for updates.
Cheap DVD/Blu-ray players are largely disposable items sold by the bucket load, often under a huge range of different names/models (IE Tesco want a player for an offer, so they order in 50k with their branding, and possibly a different colour facia).
If the op can find out what the original base version of his player is, he might be able to get a generic version of the firmware that will work, but it's a risky route as getting the wrong one will kill the player.

By the sounds of it the player is fit for the purpose at the time it was sold, but not for the latest disks.
Given that over the years there have been loads of DVD and blu-ray players that have had problems with later disks, I suspect somewhere there will be a precedent (for example early DVD players had serious issues with a lot of discs, including the Matrix).

Although I understand I feel it's so short sighted of these companies to not insist the hardware they sell is not supported for say 5 years.

OP not sure if this will help but have a look http://ttselectrical.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2566/~/firmware-update-for-the-technika-brss10-blu-ray-player

It could also be said that the problem was inherent - but by design!

The issue is not with the manufacture of the player, who built it to the industry specs at the time.
The problem is the manufacture of the disks (read the greedy studio's) who keep moving the goal posts.

If they made the product affordable people would not copy the disks.
