I can't really think of a similar example where a product acts like this or where a product says that it may not operate in a similar way in the future. For me the difficulty is that the physical media hasn't changed and that the disc codes are changed on purpose by design which requires the unit to be updated, the unit comes with the ability to be updated to support the format but that the updates aren't being provided. The format was designed so that the codes can change and therefore Tesco should know and support this.

Thank you for your answer :)

An example I can think of is the Sony Playstation 3 - the first models, referred to as the fat model had a number of different HDD sizes, but only the 80GB model at the time would play PS2 games as Sony removed the software capability from any other models of the device. The hardware remained the same, the discs and the media remained the same, the software was changed to make it impossible to play PS2 on the PS3.

I didn't complain at all about this, mainly because I sold my PS3 for £3 less than I bought it for due to people wanting that functionality.

Personally I think it stinks if the 'sco won't release or even entertain a firmware update. It really shows how defective the system is that you're better off going illegal than trying to stay legal. The scheme works on the idea of throwing old bluray discs under a bus assuming they can be copied, so throwing older players under the same bus when they switched keys. Technology working against all parties.

What would happen if the keys changed 2 weeks after purchase instead of 2 years? How about 2 months? Where is 'the line'?
  • If the player was only 50-60 quid and you've had two years use, if you could convince that it's a SOGA issue they can deduct from the refund to allow for the use of the product. Aside from anything else, I don't think it's worth the effort chasing the matter for the amount you might get back, just buy a branded replacement.

The model can be upgraded online, however they aren't supplying an update;.

Why do you expect Tesco to provide the update in store when it can be had online?

Given you clearly have internet access, then updating the player is not a issue.

I'm not aware of any store that provides updates to customers via any other method except via internet or direct to the player/system.

I assume they meant it could be upgraded online, but they aren't supplying an update.

I'd be very angry if it was my Blu-ray player, why should it matter if it was a fairly cheap model.

I'd be inclined to contact Head Office by phone and see what they say, much better than writing in my opinion.

Going by what the OP wants, thousands upon thousands would be due a partial refund etc for phones bought on Android and Apple system.

I bought an HTC phone with Android 2.2, many apps won't work on it, because they require later firmware, which HTC say can't be handled by my phone.

I didn't expect HTC to know that later Android firmware wouldn't work with it, I just get on with it.

Technology is changing all the time, items aren't supported forever and in the case of phones, many are left behind with firmware update, a lot less than 2 years down the line.

Too many people let companies off with these things.
