 My electricity bill is usually £220-£240 per quarter. We live in a 5 bedroom house and I do use washer and tumble dryer a lot. We have 5 kids and they nevere turn anything off. Imagine my shock when my elctricity bill came today £333.10!!!!!

I nearly dropped, called the electricity board and they confirmed it was approx £100 more than normal. They also confirmed what we have used since meter was read is on track with our mormal bill, approx £20 per week.

I know I shouldd stop using dryer but it is on no more than normal, we are now trying to find out whaa has happened.

Does anyone know of a web site that will give info on how much a household item uses in electricty?

I think I need to take out everything electric and use candles lol

Every electric item you have will have a lable on it somewhere and it will have on it the KWH of that item.... 1 KWH = 1 unit of electricity evey hour it is running, check your electricity bill to find out how much 1 unit costs.

I assume the figures quoted mean per quarter not per month. If they are per month you must be lit up like Blackpool :D

I have a large 4 bed house and use just £24.50 per month (£73 per quarter). This includes using washing machine, tumble dryer, diswasher, oven etc.

Do you leave telly etc on standby overnight or if out of the house?

no it's per quarter, nothing left on standby except computers. We have an old freezer in garage, about 20 yo. Lady at electricty dept did ask if we were running any old refridgeration. It's going to skip tomorrow.

There is a page from NPower that will give you a rough guide to energy consumption on most items. Old electrical appliances do use a LOT of electricity. Also, check that perhaps your meter isn't leaking. It may be possible.

There should be a link on the utilities section about how much power a computer uses. There is a link on there about working out how much electricity an appliance uses.

Was it a 13 week quarter or did it slip a few weeks? If your bill for this quarter last year was 240 then add on about 20% worth of rises in the last year (now 288) a bit of slippage on the dates for the quarter (2/13) and you are virtually at 330. Frightening, isn't it.

    Thanks for the replies guys

We do not use the immersion heater, Been in house 5 years and it has never been on. We use an electric shower and we have oil central heating.

Just to give an idea what we use...
no one at home all day so mon-fri only thing on til 5 pm is frisge freezer. At night usually 3 tv's in different rooms because of the kids. Computers in kids rooms are never turned off, sick telling the kids to turn them off but they never do ( don't know how much electricity computer uses )

    Dishwasher 7 loads a week
Washing machine 8 loads a week
Tumber dryer 8 loads a week

I have found one thing though that I only bought 4 months ago that may be why my electric has jumped...I bought halogen uplighter according to the rating on it it uses between 50w-300w . someone worked it out for me and we think it costs .12p per hour,at full power, during the winter this light was on approx 7 hours per day, as we have a very dark living room, so that means it was costingus .84p per night. I know it does not seem a lot but 88p @ 91days is £76.44!!!! Well I guess thats where the extra eletricity used came from. The light has now gone to a room we never use and a good old fashed table lamp in it's place.

Does anyone know how much it is to run a computer???

In your previous house was the bill also the same sort of size - obviously 5 years is a long time.

We have a 4 bed house - kids tellys on, 10 + washes and tumbles per week. Dishwasher same as you. I am at home all day so computer and telly/ music are often on - I like noise! Our leccy is about £90 per quarter.

It might be worth having your meter checked. A neighbour of ours had this done once.
