I abhor some of the attitudes expressed here. What about personal pride, dignity and conscience?

    So grabbing and ...

Neither am I, and wasn't when I lived in Spain (now back).

However I know a couple who walked away and left debts in the UK, then chalked up debts in Spain and left there too.

You can't keep running for the rest of your life.

If I were you, I would do a midnight flit.

Govt. records are in such a mess I bet it wont even register on your pension history.

It appears, some people don't have any.
  • I'd probably feel the same and try to avoid repaying the debt.

So is it the case that the debt will never go away? The OP can be taken to Court at any point in the future? - Unlike with non-government debt?

Not repaying a debt is a form of theft in my books

If I were you I'd just do one out of the country and forget about it.

The benefits system in the UK is based on a get what you can principle, so you may as well keep the £20k.

I know a couple who came here from abroad 10 years ago, worked cash in hand all that time, bought 3 properties to rent in their home country, had 2 kids on the NHS and sent to UK schools. They have now decided to go home and the UK government are giving them an £8k cash payment for doing so. A charity will be paying their air fares.

Don't feel guilty. Everyone is at it.

I've known nothing of this level, so where is it published?

You can't keep running from debt, although I can see how some would like to try.

Do you have friends and family here?

If you run away, then they may be contacted by debt collection agencies?

If you ever needed to come back (eg someone dying) would you be too scared to do do in case you got caught up with?

Scaremongering is not the way forward!

He isn't running away, but simply 'walking' away!

There is no way that the DWP can recover any of that money if he moved to Canada.

He can come and go to the UK as many times as he wants - there is not a thing that the DWP can do about it.

The only way that the DWP will have any hope of getting money from him is by a deduction from any future benefits ie State Retirement pension if he is able to claim it.

ok so I have a pension with one company about 10 years worth would I basically just have to write that off then? its not just the dwp I owe about £35000 in total, so I may as well just chip.

IT wont affect my credit rating abroad apparently.

No, the DWP can only recover the debt by deduction from the State Pension.

wouldn't Canada have restrictions on having a job before getting there, or are you just going to run up debts there as well.

It makes me angry you wanted what you got and ran up the debts the least you can do is stay and pay off what you owe in some form or other, we haven't spent or had fantastic holidays or goods either and just plod on, others run up debts and !!!!!! off, someone has to suffer for that money be it the banks etc. tell me why should you get away with it while the rest of us toe the line.....grrrr.

    Simply because you can!!

I don't blame him for taking this action.

If HMRC and the NHS put just half the effort that the DWP put in reclaiming money owed, then yes you have a point.
Until such time that there is a level playing field I don't see why anyone should have any moral responsibility in paying it back.

Just like the MP's expenses scandal a few years ago!!

And it's not just restricted to them. All many of people in this country will take what they can if there is a way that they can do it. It's only human nature.
