How is body fat measured?
There are problems in applying the standard methods for assessment of body composition to athletic populations, and it is not clear that any of the methods commonly used for the general population is entirely reliable. At health clubs and elsewhere, fat levels are usually assessed by use of skinfold callipers to measure the thickness of the fat layer that lies below the skin at various different sites on the body. The results are then fed into an equation that predicts the body fat level based on a comparison with more accurate measurements made on a group of ‘normal’ people. Predictive equations for estimating body fat content based on indirect methods are unreliable for several reasons, not least because the equations that are generated from normal populations are not applicable to elite athletes. Such methods have been widely used, but the results of these measurements must be treated with caution, especially if you are an athlete.
Thats kind of what I thought...I know that I have high body fat I would just like to know what percentage and then be able to lower this.I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

Thanks hun...I hope it goes well too and I can do some decent mileage!
What it means for a gorgeous maz is that as long as your slow run is not actually making your heart rate really high then you should be burning fat. I def think that my problem is that I have been running too fast and burning glycogen and not fat  . From now on Fat burning is the priority so that the running is easier, Im healthier and I should get quicker :j
thanks for the explanation Sal...

OK.....I have made contact with a running club and had a couple of nice emails back from them. I will have my first session with them on Monday :eek:Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. Morning everyone. TGIF!!! :j :T
I haven't read any posts since earlier in the week so I'll have a lot to keep me out of mischief this weekend.
My running hasn't gone too well this week. After the speed session on Tuesday, I cycled to work on Wednesday and yesterday. Having gotten soaked en route home, I really didn't feel inspired to change into dry clothes only to get soaked en route to hills training so I didn't go. Fell asleep on the sofa
This morning I jogged into work. I'd like to say it was a run but I was so sluggish, I felt as if someone had tied heavy weights to my legs. I had a small rucksack with change of clothing etc in it so that probably didn't help. It was lovely [STRIKE]running[/STRIKE] jogging along the river from Vauxhall to London Bridge but I could have done with one of the cyclists giving me a lift from the London Eye to London Bridge. My time was 5.99 miles in 1hr 6 mins which was slightly quicker than my goal of 6 miles in 70 mins.
At least I've got the running out the way so I can enjoy my evening. I might try it again next Friday, but crawl out of bed earlier and have a mouthful of coffee to see if that makes a difference.
Becky, I still salute you and anybody else who can run early in the mornings :AThe 365 Day 1p Challenge 2025. Member #420 -

Sallyx it's a good idea and I hope you find one. It really helps with motivation and increased knowledge. I'm not sure I'd have gone for a marathon without my club initially and sites like this one :TThe 365 Day 1p Challenge 2025. Member #420 -
