erm no......... it was a serious question... never mind....

(and i'm the only mermaid in the village!)
I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....
    (it's part of my charm!)
  • lol rather than one for the money you could be "run for the money" ... ever the cheese ball sorry lol
  • Goodness, it looks like its been quiet on here this morning - must be a lot of running going on up and down the country!!

Anyway, I found this article on the depleted feeling some people feel after a race and thought I'd share it with you. We've all felt it at some point, especially in the early races when you've gone past trying to just complete a distance and just entered 'chasing times' mode.

But it really is ridiculous and unnecessary. If there is a depleted feeling after a race it is being viewed in the wrong way. The key is to look at each race as giving you a suitcase full of data and information, which you can record and then look at, in conjunction with data from your other races, to see what patterns are emerging. One race in isolation doesn't say a great deal, but patterns do and teach how your body responds to different preparations.

You are an ongoing fascinating experiment and should enjoy the discovery of how you function!!

Anyway, this is the article (with the most pertinent bits in bold):

After months of training and weeks of anticipation, it’s all over for London Marathon competitors. Following the event this weekend many may be feeling euphoric, but more likely many will be picking over the bones of their performance. And as well as feeling knackered, many may be feeling a little blue that the goal they had been working towards is now a memory.

Sports psychologist Martin Perry points out that the mental and physical exertion of completing a marathon is bound to leave participants feeling exhausted psychologically as well as physically.

Perry, who describes himself as a confidence coach, works with athletes to build up and develop their self-belief. Professional athletes, he says, are often affected by crises of confidence. “You’re judged on results, times, medals,” he points out. “If you don’t do well you may feel you’re letting people down. That can create pressures, which you can turn inward. It’s the nature of competition.”

Non-professional athletes can be hit hard after an event too. “I would agree with the concept of being down after an event,” says Sarah Westbarn, 39. “When I did the London marathon, for example, I expected to feel some elation, but when I crossed the line I didn’t, I just thought ‘is that it?’”

“[How you feel] really depends on how you think about yourself and how you think about your performance,” explains Perry. And if you are feeling depleted it may be hard to analyse your race performance properly.

“Self-analysis can be pretty wide of the mark, [and] a bit self critical,” he says. A sound post-race analysis also depends on your goals to begin with. “Expectation creates a level of anticipation, and there may be a gap between expectation and performance,” says Perry. So for example, if you have set yourself a time goal and failed by just a few minutes, you may be driving yourself mad trying to work out exactly where you went wrong.”

And try and enjoy yourself during the marathon. “It’s a fantastic event – everyone’s in good spirits and everyone’s really friendly,” says Westbarn.

Perry also likes to focus on the positive. The post race analysis should do two things: confirm your strengths and turn your weaknesses into strengths. “Ask yourself ‘what are the good things that I have done?’ he says.

“Then identify any weak areas that can be turned into strengths, and instead of blaming yourself for the weak areas, make them a goal for training. You’re really striving to do something about them.”

Another way to stop yourself feeling down after a marathon is to give yourself a break – even if you are planning to start training for another event.

“If you look at any of the major sports, athletes always have a break afterwards where they don’t do any training - you’ve got to have a break,” says Moss. He suggests that in order to beat the blues, you look to the future. That could mean booking a holiday or a night out to celebrate and relax, or planning a training programme for the next marathon.

After the marathon, Moss has some downtime planned, during which he will evaluate what happened in the race and start planning the next one. “It’s a cycle,” he explains. “You just tick over and keep your fitness going.”

  • Heya all!

I haven't been out running, trying to clean the car! I am planning to pop out tonight for my run as opposed to tomorrow morning as my brother is coming down to visit and it means I can have a lie in too! Will be the first Sunday morning lie in (well one when I have not been out running about anyway!) for a long time!

It is such a gorgeous day today! Gonna do myself a 6 miler (was planning on a 9 miler initially but in this heat probably best to stick to 6). Then gonna start thinking about training shedules ready for next week!
I have been in contact with a running group who meet Mondays and Thursdays about 15 mins from my house. As I have recently passed my Driving Test and got a little run about, I thought I could go and meet them and give it a go? Thing is they are pretty hardcore and want runners who can run 10 min miles and under. I know I have done this before as my last 10k was 59 mins and the first 8 miles of the half last week were just under 10 min miles, just a case of how long I can keep the spped up for! Think they run for about an hour or so, so will probably be 5-6 milers to begin with. So if I do go on Monday, will be better for the ol' leggies to run tonight rather than a run on Sunday and then on a Monday too!

Hope everyone is well and out enjoying the sunshine! I am on call with work today (not very often I get the chance for the extra £££) so am staying in until I have finished!

Sounds good Donna, glad you are able to join a group. Yes I have been out enjoying the sunshine, just had a lazy sleep in the garden (was so tired) and now feeling all lethargic and needing a run!

I shall be interested to see your training plan, I am planning on writing one up myself this evening when DD is in bed and I can get some peace and quiet!

    Heya Sallyx!

I certainly did! Did a 6 miler and left the ol' Ipod Nike + thingy going the whole way around so I didn't stop it when stuck waiting at traffic lights etc and was a right sweaty betty the whole way round...but I did it in an amazing 9 min 45 sec per mile making the run just over 58 minutes!!! I am sooooooo chuffed with that it is unreal! :j :j :j

Deffo feeling a lot stronger now and quicker too! I hope I can build on this and get even faster! Roll on this 10k...I am gonna SMASH my last 10k time...big stylee

Really sorry to hear you are still feeling poorly :grouphug: have a dodgy hug from me! I hope you get better very soon xxx
