but my cat doesn't like water - she will not touch it. the people at the rescue centre also told me that she won't drink water but only milk (i guess that's what she's used to & that what she loves)
nothing to see here, move along...

Cats will all drink water - although they much prefer very fresh or, even better, running water. There's no need to feed milk at all, I agree. It's only natural for any mammal to drink milk while they are still suckling their mother!

To the OP, if the kittens are struggling with solids get some Cimicat (milk specifically designed for kittens) powder from your vet or pet shop. You can mix this up with kitten complete food to make a gruel which they will be able to lap. Soaking dry food makes it easier for them to adjust to. You can alter the consistency of their meals gradually until they can manage the solids better.

asea I always thought my cats didn't drink water as they never touched the bowl I put down for them, but over the years I came to realise that they drink from the most odd places , ponds, puddles, bird baths, dripping taps I know one cat that drinks from the toilet bowl YUK!!! so your cat probabely drinks when it is out of your sight... or gets all the moisture it needs from its food....

For those that are saying it''s unnatural for cats to drink milk as adults, yes of course it is but the same applies to humans and I don't think anyone would advocate stopping adult humans drinking milk.

Cat milk costs around 50p a bottle, what's the harm in treating our cats to a small treat now and again? My cat who I had for 19 years wasn't interested in milk, cows or 'cat', but my two new arrivals would sell their soul for a drop of cat milk and go crazy for it when they see me with the bottle!

Back to the OP, Pets at Home do a range of cat milks (kitten, adult and senior) that are around the 50p mark which is cheaper than the likes of Felix/Whiskas milk. You also get 250ml per bottle which is more than the 'branded' ones.

My cats have a bowl of water out all day every day, it just evaporates.

Why have fresh clean water when you can drink out of puddles, the canal across the road or the neighbours tub of water lillies !

I got one of those posh cat drinking fountains for xmas from my dad (technically not a present for me but hey ho!) and I'm amazed at the difference it's made.

Previously one cat drank loads but the other just wasn't interested in fact the only time I saw him drinking indoors was when the bath tap was dripping, but now I've seen him loads of times drinking from the fountain so I definitely think it's true about them not wanting to drink standing water.

As for giving them milk, what a couple of the above posters have said about not giving them milk is rubbish. Most cats are fed some kind of food with various meats in but I'm sure you wouldn't see a domestic shorthair stalking and taking down a 1/2 ton jersey cow and feeding on it's remains but we still feed them beef flavour cat food!

If they like it, it's good for them and you're not over doing it there's no reason you shouldn't give it to them.

I've been looking into getting one of those fountains, keep browsing ebay hoping for a bargain to pop out. Plus my OH thinks i'm mad as i treat the cats as if they were my children and love to spoil them with pressies.

As for testing out the milks, soya milk was a big no no, even the baby kittens turned their nose up :(

I know its not essential that they have cat milk, but i do like to spoil them, i feel sorry for them eating the same thing day in day out even though i know they don't care.

Thanks for all the tips guys :T
    :p Love being a mummy
