Cat Milk

Hi there

Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative to branded cat milk. I've never given them cows milk as i believe its not good for them (if anyone can inform me of why i'm very interested).

I like to give it them as a treat and as i have 3 newly weaned kittens i'd prefer them to have milk available as they have mastered drinking but aren't too clued up on the eating malarky.

Any advice is appreciated :D x

According to Cats protection, cows milk can cause diarrhoea in some cats, they recommend 'Lactose - reduced' milk which is available in most supermarkets.

I haven't tried this myself but how about soya milk as they are lactose free? I might give it a go as a special treat now and then.

as for cow's milk being bad for cats, I totally agree, and I think saxy1/cats protection is right about the lactose. when my kittens were eating this particular high street brand of kitten food, they have always had problems with their stool being too loose and diarrhoea-like (wet wipes anyone?:o ), we couldn't figure out why as the vets have cleared their health and we don't give them any milk  then we realised one of the bits in the kitten food actually had a 'milky centre' meant as a nuturious treat. argh. we were so miffed why we couldn't find any high street brand kitten food without some sort of milk in it! I actually had to manually pick out the ones with the milky bits one by one! fortunately for us, there are sensible cat food people in James Wellbeloved! They've been on their ocean fish and rice ever since and have good solid stools all the time now.

My year old cat gave birth to a single beautiful kitten 17/5 - aah! She stayed with her for 2 days, then kept disappearing. I noticed on Sunday am little kitty was not being fed, so dashed to Tesco's. I picked up some Whiskas kitten milk and watered it down a little and tried to feed kitty. Also purchased a small carton of Sma 'gold' ready to feed baby milk as a back up - this worked the best, no sickness, or diarrhoea. We purchased a feeding bottle from pet shop next day and got stuck in!!

2 weeks on we have the most adorable fluffy blue eyed black and white half 'persian' chubby kitten. :) called 'mittens'. Her mother 'Mrs Socks' is out with Mr Persian (the boyfriend) every day chasing birds in garden.

Anyhow, Sma gold works for us.

I've 3 cats. 1 loves her cat milk and sits and waits for more when the bowl is empty, 1 takes it now and again and the youngest doesn't go near it!!

That said, because I have one who has milk every day (she also drinks water but goes between the two) I buy my cat milk in bulk from http://www.zooplus.co.uk. Spending £29 gets free delivery so I get my whiskas cat treats from here at the same time which saves me a fair bit.

Sainsburys and Morrisons have their own brand of cat milk at 49p ish I think which is cheaper than whiskas or felix.

My cats get lactose reduced milk which I discovered long ago was much cheaper than the tiny packets of overpriced 'cat milk'.

It's called Lactofree and is available in most big supermarkets, Tesco, Sains, Asda, Waitrose etc. It costs £1.24 but that is for a 1 litre pack. You'll find it win the longlife milk aisles and it's easy to spot as it is a bright green and white packet with a picture of a black/white cows head on the front.

Much more economical and they love it, and there's never been any ill effects with any of them (and I have 4 of them!)

  • Not quite sure why anyone needs to feed adult cats milk at all as this is a completely unnatural food for them - cats only should drink milk when they are kittens - and that should really be cat milk from a cat unless there is a problem with their mum. My cats just have fresh water. My current cat is completely obsessed with it and even likes a little paddle in his water dish ( no- we don't know why either! Give your cats water - it's the money saving way.

I agree with catshousekeeper , cats don't need milk for any reason, its just spending money for moneys sake.. most of the moisture they need comes from wet food and if they only eat dry they will drink water from anywhere they like. My cats have only ever had water and that they prefer to drink from a puddle or the bird bath than the nice fresh bowl I put down for them daily... but thats cats for you . I occasionally will give them a finger of cream to lick as the more fat the better it has less lactose... but thats it...
