Your cabinet may get upgraded eventually if BT consider it to be a worthwhile investment for them.

Who decides whether my cabinet is a worthwhile investment for them and what criteria do they use ?
The number of BT customers ?
If this is a major one - most people around here are not BT - So how long are we expected to wait ?

BT Openreach have a £2.5billion contract with the government to upgrade 2/3 of the country to fast fibre by spring 2014 - they are failing to meet the requirements and the government doesn't give two hoots about this !!
Anyway - the details don't state the number of users that need to be connected - so, in theory, BT need only upgrade a single user in each of 66% of exchanges across the country to get their blood money !
I am not, for one minute, suggesting that this is what BT are doing - but in my case - with the rest of the town upgraded, this is how it feels to me !!

    Your post is mostly wrong.

The 66% is bt's own target. It is entirely self funded by Bt, yes £2.5 billion! No government funding.

Bt will have to lease these new lines to the likes of sky, carphone etc. none of the other providers are investing any money in this, but they just moan if they don getvwhatvhey want!

As a Bt shareholder I'm glad they are only providing fibre to areas where it is commercially viable. Would be a bit irrespinsible if they just rolled it out regardless of cost wouldn't it.

Openreach are building it and are actually building it faster than they said initially.

Well BT decide and I imagine that the basis will be the number of premises the cabinet serves and their assessment of what percentage will pay for the service. If, for instance, the cabinet serves a load of retirement homes or buy-to-lets with a transient occupancy there isn't much hope of a return on investment. If, otoh, there is some government cash going because its a cab in a village and where they think there will be a high signup it will probably get done. The number of BT customers is irrelevant as just about all ISPs apart from wireless, cable, and some in Kingston on Hull use BT infrastructure.

Fibre? A pipe dream for me!

My exchange hasn't even got a date for upgrade to enable ADSL2/2+.

I think I'm on the digital highway bypass.

  • One our estate, the fibre was put in during build in 2000 - 2002.

Yet our exchange in Stonehouse, GL10 is not even considered. This is poor BT. We have a large industrial estate, and that is like being on old modems!!

Sorry - but you are biased and incorrect
I live in a totally residential road - you only have to scan for WiFi signals to see the potential difference that fast broadband will make
The decision is clearly based on the fact that most of the potential users would not be BT.....
BT took on the contract in full knowledge of the T&C - and if they didn't realise that many users would not be using them as ISP's - they deserve all the complaints that they are getting
I, for one - would not invest in such a company........

What has WIFI and super fast broadband got to do with each other?

I live in a major built up area but because of the distance from the exchange i can just about get 4MB also.

There is a closer exchange but my line doesnt go through that for some reason.

If i want Super fast then im looking at paying more than double to what i currently pay.

I would rather be spending my money elsewhere. But they said i should be getting 68mb+ They estimated 3MB on my current line and i get 4mb. So i may get a bit better?

What contract is that? I thought we had this cleared up - you are not in a rural area so there is no government funding involved in your case - it's purely down to BT deciding whether or not to invest their own money upgrading your cab. If they do install fibre it makes no real difference to the BT company that installed it (Openreach) whether or not you are a BT (the ISP) customer or not as they get the same revenue for use of the infrastructure regardless of ISP. Of course the BT Group would prefer you to chose BT as an ISP.
