the point I was getting at was:

Could the shop have taken my CC but the man just chose not to??

it sounds as thought that is exactly what he did.

Have you looked at the Paypoint website to see if you can do it with an Amex online?

yes. it's not very helpful, and includes the following in the FAQs:

"Do I have to pay in cash?
Yes, unless you are paying for your TV licence, when it is also possible to use a debit card."

which is definitely, i am pleased to say, incorrect.

People who are "in the know" won't tell you on this forum (the most popular UK personal finance forum in the world)

Don't you have a "hidden forum" on the stoozing website for this type of query ?

    not sure what you mean.

if there was anyone on here who can confirm that they have used Amex successfully in a PayPoint terminal, that would be great. the volume of traffic here is why i asked here..:)

My local SPAR shop accepts credit cards when I pay for my electric and gas and mobile top ups. They do not make a charge for this but I am using a credit card not Amex.

it's an Amex credit card that i want to use, ideally.

do you ever get to pay more than £200 in a single transaction?

Firstly, AMEX isn't standard on card terminals and needs to be setup in addition to normal credit/debit cards; most smaller shops wouldn't bother.

Secondly, they would make a loss as the card charge will be more than the money they make from paypoint.

For both reasons, I doubt they will .

LOL no usually £20 or so.

You still haven't said why you need to use your Amex card.

In other words a potential scam when found out will result in you losing the cashback but hey ho what do I know?
