It is PayPoint not the retailer that chooses. And they do not want you to use a rival service. (After all, if they let you use American Express sooner or later you would realise it is less hassle to pay for whatever you are paying directly with American Express.)

but you can pay a bill, or into an account, via PayPoint using a Mastercard/Visa.

Not sure but the question that begs to be asked is why? I presume it's some kind of Amex points generating exercise?

I went to the corner shop recently put my credit card in, it came up 'enter pin', just as i was about to the indian guy shouted oh no we don't take credit card!! and pressd the paypoint machine a few times (to cancel it I guess)!!!

so was he having me on as he didn't want merchant charges?

So it isn't individual shops that decide if they take cc via paypoint... it is paypoint who dictate it to the shop?

Paypoint maks very littlemoney for small retailers - it is often used to entice customers in in the hope you buy other products as well as paying your bills.
So yes they can decide which cards they want to accept.

Have you looked at the Paypoint website to see if you can do it with an Amex online?

the point I was getting at was:

Could the shop have taken my CC but the man just chose not to??

PayPoint terminals can definately accept credit card payments. i understand that the recipient of your money has a deduction by PayPoint for doing so. normal purchases via a card terminal generate merchant fees, as standard. not sure whether it costs the retailer to accept PayPoint payments on a credit card. anyone confirm?
