I thought it was the retailer rather than the manufacturer I had to deal with? Fujitsu have already said I would need to pay for any repair they do. There has been no accidental damage etc. It just stopped working one day...

Your contract is with the retailer
If I were you - I would try Dabs again - don't threaten them with any legal action at this stage - try to get them to examine the laptop first
Frankly - I am surprised that Dabs haven't offered to help - they have a good reputation to uphold !!
If necessary - you do have the SOG act....
Don't accept any excuse based on it being purchased through Ebay - that makes no difference to your legal rights.

hard disks are £40, what's the fault, running an os from cd doesn't need a hd.

Agreed. Try a Linux boot DVD (or USB drive) to see if that will run - if it will then it may just be a HDD failure, so easy to resolve - buy a new HDD and reload the OS.

If the Linux boot disk won't run then you've got another issue (e.g. motherboard failure), so pursuing Dabs would be worthwhile.

What is the error code you've seen? Have you been told what it means?

I have tried a Linux CD OS without success so perhaps motherboard is most likely. Fujitsu just said hardware fault and want me to pay for any more investigation.

If I had been sure it was hdd or something else else fairly straightforward i'd be open to fixing it myself but as it is I think it needs to go back.

    Thanks again for the advice

Error code I get with fujitsu diagnostics software is:
    DIFS system code: 7EXW-XKBZ-9HTTC

Googling the first part shows a similar problem which I think turned out to be hdd hence my guess but you're right that doesn't really fit with it not booting from CD.

No - I reckon that with a bit of luck - Dabs should offer you a replacement or a full refund !!
You do have the receipt/proof of purchase - don't you ??
IF Dabs were to deal with it, after 14 months it'd be a repair.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

Not necessarily - I have had faulty devices replaced by Dabs in the past....(over 3 years old in one case)

It's a lifebook AH530. Purchase price 269GBP. I'd be quite happy with a repair to be honest but I'm not keen on having to throw money at it myself. Especially not returning it to fujitsu when they have quoted 150 just for parts if it is a hard drive (as said upthread they can be got for less than a third of that) and given me no indication of how much to diagnose it without calling a premium rate number. If it turned out dabs could get out of dealing with it I'd probably better getting a local independent to look at it.

Appreciate all the advice. Have sent dabs a brief email to ask them to reconsider and remind them that the expiry of the warranty does not negate my statutory rights. Fingers crossed!
