Laptop failed just out of warranty - rights under soga?

I bought a new fujitsu laptop just over a year ago (think it was May 2012) from the eBay outlet of dabs. On Friday it failed to startup. I have tried windows recovery and running an os from disc but the machine will not boot. I managed to run the fujitsu diagnostics software and they tell me the error code I was given indicates likely hardware failure. Fujitsu have offered me their paid for collect and repair service.
Given that the laptop is only 14 months old is it reasonable for me to go back to the retailer under SOGA? My last laptop lasted me 6 years without hardware problems. Any advice much appreciated and thanks in advance.

How much have Fujitsu quoted for the "look see" ?
I agree that Dabs should repair it after 14 months - have you informed them of the problem ?
Dabs is Dabs - whether under the umbrella of Ebay or not - they should sort it - Dabs are normally pretty good !!0 -
Thank you. Not been in touch with dabs yet as I wasn't sure if they would have to deal with it at this age. Fujitsu have told me that for any more information regarding their service I need to call the premium rate 09 phone number so I'm not keen to take this further. They did give me a number for their parts service also who quoted me 150GBP for a new hard drive (my guess as the problem).
Think I'll contact dabs customer service and see what they say. Good to hear they are usually ok! Thanks again0 -
althou you shouldn't expect a refurbished item to last as long as a brand new one0

The laptop was new when bought. It had a one year warranty but is now just over that. Should I expect to pay a proportion of any repair?0

No - I reckon that with a bit of luck - Dabs should offer you a replacement or a full refund !!
You do have the receipt/proof of purchase - don't you ??0 -
That sounds promising. I have all of the emailed receipts etc from eBay on an external drive which I think/hope would be enough proof of purchase. Thanks again0

Just got a response from dabs. Basically told me to get lost as its out of warranty. Told me to go to fujitsu... I dug out the proof of purchase and it's slightly older than I guessed. Failed at 15.5 months but that's still unacceptable in my opinion. Any advice for my next move? Should I quote soga to them and give them a timeframe for a satisfactory response? Threaten small claims otherwise or is that too much at this stage? I'm really struggling without my laptop to be honest.

If it's out of warranty and broken, due to no fault of your own, then getting in contact with the manufacturer is the best thing to do. They'll have a look at the laptop and if they determine that it's a fault with the machine and not an issue you've caused, then you'll get a replacement or they'll fix it for free.
If it's damage you've caused yourself by not following the manufacturers instructions or dropping the laptop and causing a connection to loosen, then it'll be up to you to foot the bill.0 -
I thought it was the retailer rather than the manufacturer I had to deal with? Fujitsu have already said I would need to pay for any repair they do. There has been no accidental damage etc. It just stopped working one day...0
