Holiday Price hikes in school holidays

In my area due to various things the schools often don't start back until mid/late in the 1st week of September so if it falls that way on the calendar I have been able to take last few days Aug/first few days Sept. without missing any school.
This week is often a lot cheaper as most kids have to be back for the beginning of the week and many holiday companies hike prices simply for the August calendar month.
I think the education system needs reforming so that the school holidays are the same length but spread over a wider period (say mid June to first 2 weeks September), assigned regionally by county and rotated so each county gets a turn at the better weeks.
Neighbouring counties should be in overlapping zones so 2 parents working in different counties can book time off together.
It would widen the season, help holiday providers out, bring costs down as demand would be more spread out.
It would mean radical change in schools but I don't see any insurmountable problems.0 -

You really don't think that tour operators would hike their prices all the way through from June to September?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

Think about that logically - it would mean everyone having the same weeks! County A is next to B and C, which are next to D and E, and so on.0 -
I wonder if the racism card could be used. Scottish schoolchildren start their summer holidays earlier so presumably get cheaper prices.0

Not from scotland they dont . Just been away with a jock and they travelled from edinburgh to mankchester to save £500 . But we can fly from scotland from mid august for less . hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

The last 2 weeks of the school year are worthless educational wise, unless watching movies counts towards something?Pants0 -

The formative years are just as important as the exam years.Considering the OPs child s only 6 years old, I hardly think a holiday would deprive them of their education!
It's got nothing to do with how hard people work and everything to do with supply and demand. It's no more complex than that.Get real!! The OP was asking ppls opinion on holiday costs..... why should ppl who work hard have to pay more?
And yes, I have several children of my own.0 -
we just booked flights over Easter next year that were less expensive than booking for non-school holiday dates this October as we took advantage of a sale when we saw it...we also never fly on a Saturday...and we never book packages.
I appreciate that we also do not have kids so we aren't tied to school holidays but with some pre-planning there are good deals to be had even during school holiday periods.
it is supply and demand..it's not screw the parents with school-age children pricing.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0
