They dont hike the price up they give discounts when supply is less

Yes they do but the brochure prices are also more. We went on holiday in May I paid £150 i got a good discount think the brochure price was nearly £400. However the same holiday in August is over £800 (no discount).

Try being a family of 5 during the school holidays. We were hit double as most tour ops only cater for families of 3 or 4,thats when I stopped using tour ops and travel agents.
We used trains, planes, buses and ferries. We have driven to airports as far as Aberdeen, Leeds, Birmingham, Luton and Stansted for cheap flights. It's not up to the government to make companies do this or that. Get inventive. Design your own holiday.

Use skyscanner, use avios, use groupon, use trivago, use club card deals. The possibilities are endless.

No need to spend more in holidays. Ignore the holiday hotspots and DIY flights and hotels.

It depends if you are able to do the above. I am a single mum who suffers with anxiety and stress, there is no way I could organise something like that I would not be able to cope with the extra worry of it. I can only drive within my local area therefore my only option is a fairly local holiday that is in a resort. (I am hoping to try camping to try to avoid the more expensive prices but even that is going to be alot more stressful for me). Some may have a disability that means they need a package holiday not everyone can just arrange their own.

Just pay the fine then. You either want your children educated or you want a cheap holiday.
I appreciate it can be quite daunting. Camping nearby is a sensible option for a first go. Maybe a weekend.
Before you know it, you could be trying something more adventurous next year

Even adding the cost of the fine onto the cheaper price it will still work out cheaper to go out of main holidays. the holiday companies will no doubt raise prices evn more during holidays now.

I'm a teacher and we have 4 kids - 3 of which are now over 12 and classed as adults according to the big holiday companies. But that's a whole other story.

I can only go on holiday during the holidays - I have NO choice in that matter.

I have tried to make a DIY holiday and believe me it is no cheaper once you start adding baggage and transfers - it tends to work out the same.

Plus with 4 children I want to be covered by the 'package' experience in case anything goes wrong - e.g. ash cloud = nightmare!!!! Flights and accommodation booked separately often means you are on your own if something goes wrong, believe me I know!

I also DON'T want to go camping, I DON'T want to drive for 5 hours with 4 kids to find a cheaper flight and then fly for another 4 hours and I WANT a typical holiday in the sun where I can relax after working hard all year and saving every month.

We book our holidays a year in advance and try to get a free child place, use cashback sites, codes etc. But holidays can double once the school holidays start.

We are going to Turkey next week, booked in May 2012 and we've paid £5,500 for the 6 of us in 2 rooms All Inclusive, that same holiday is still available but is now £9,900!!!!

A flight to Lanzarote on 1st Oct is £190 this year, change the dates to October half term (26th Oct) and the flights jump to £507. That is disgusting!

    Makes my blood boil

And i would like to stay in the One and Only in the Maldives for £19, same as a travelodge just off the M6. But its £800 a night. Get over it.

When you say weekends I assume you mean 3 nights fri-mon. When my son was in reception I took him for weekends as it meant he only needed and one and half days off (Friday pm and Monday) We left straight after he finished on Friday and came back Monday. This is no longer an option. I wouldn't mind so much leaving straight after school on the Friday (as we stay local this would be do able for us but maybe not for others who travel further). But I don't want to be coming home on the Sunday as it would hardly be worth going.
