i guess if you like the macbook air you want smaller rather than bigger?

also have you considered a refurb macbook?

something like this might be helpful as you can configure it http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/ultraNote/
upping to the i5 3340m, 8gb ram, 500gb hybrid drive makes it £602 including delivery (make sure its a UK keyboard)
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Why don't you just get the MacBook sorted out? Coffee will either kill it or it won't-not make it run slow. At worst you probably just need to replace the keyboard if the keys are sticky.
Then do a clean reinstall and it should run faster. Have you maxed out the RAM? If not get over to crucial.com.
Software compatibility issues may be resolved by updating the OS-what version are you running now?
However if you do buy a new laptop, remember that secondhand Macs (unlike PC's) are highly marketable and command good residual values-so you can sell it and put a few hundred towards a new one.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I think the MacBook was running slow before it got wet. I think now it's dead. :(

It's running quicker than my poor old Macbook (which actually isn't running at all at the moment since it got wet!)

Affirmative! It was running slow before, now its not charging/running off AC. I'm trying drying it out for a few days then I'll see if it powers up. If it doesn't I'm screwed. I hadn't backed anything up. Stupid girl, no excuse.

If I can get a refurb for £600 then thats definitely an option...and cheers me up no end!

At the same time, I'll have a look at mint and see if I like how it runs.

Would people really buy my current Macbook (if it was working!)? Its a 2007 White 13inch Macbook...one careful lady owner lol. Apart from the coffee...

Definitely. Have a look on Amazon and eBay, there are plenty of used ones for sale.
I would definitely see if your Mac could get repaired first. Failing that, have a look at the older Macs as prices have dropped after the introduction of the newer models.

Although I still have my Win 7 laptop, I use my Macbook Air all the time now and love it to bits. Only reason I went with it, because it was cheaper than the ultra notebooks I had been looking at! Best move ever.

sold my 13" white macbook for £400 on ebay recently, so YES there is demand and good prices paid too if it was working, however I'd guess £100-200 tops for a 'gamble' purchase of a non working one?

Remember to remove the HDD (easy) and wipe it or not supply it in the sale 1st, list it with a really good description and off you go.

I love my new macbook pro retina and it's much faster however that comes at a price and is largely because of the SSD drive and 8GB ram.

If you replaced your old mb 13 with the same/similar model you could simply swap the HDD, max the memory (4gb?) and do a fresh install of the OS and solve most of your issues for a total outlay of £200 ish after you sold the broken one.

Frankly as others have said if you like using OSX you'll find windows a right PITA.
i've kept an old (win7 still mind!) PC laptop but hated using it 'between macs' even for web browsing -I keep it as it runs cycle/rowing machine software not written for the mac and because I can plug my projector into it.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

Of course! They'll buy it whether working or not. If the latter, simply sell it for parts as a non-runner. The majority of the components will be fine. You can whip the drive out and use it as a backup in a USB caddy-about a fiver.

  • Thanks all! You have been so helpful. I had no idea people would buy my old Mac and tbh, that does make a huge difference in being able to afford a new one, even if it was just £100 - £200.

I'm pretty much decided there is no point in me going for anything other than a Mac if Windows is still a pain. It's not worth the mental stress it adds to my life lol.
  • Not to start a Mac vs PC debate...but.

I had terrible trouble with my old Laptops (Compaq, Toshiba, Acer, Sony) and they were constantly in and out of PC World with various problems. And I hated Windows.

I am a heavy computer user and sick of all the hassle, 7 years ago I decided to try a MacBook and it has been AMAZING (touch wood). Never a problem. Until I knocked over a cup of coffee onto it the other day.

It has been running slow and some software isn't supported on it as it's now "old". I was considering getting a new Mac when I start my Masters Degree in September (waiting for the student discount). However...funds are low and they are SO expensive. My mobile is also awful and I really need a new one.

Can anyone recommend a decent PC Laptop that isn't too expensive? £600 max?

To be used for Uni Work, Web Browsing etc.

i would be either say get a Ipad as you can do productivty part i.e. (i am assuming for essays and dissertation) or get an refurbished Macbook Air which maybe if your luck could be around the £600 mark. not sure on that price so please do check on apple website and also please check the apple outlet in ebay as they have very good offers on there refurb equipment
