My period is not as painful as it used to be, it tends to be pain at the right side for a day or so and an upset stomach the day before. I'm also finding I get extremely tearful a couple of days before its starts (very difficult when I am at work). My period is a lot shorter than it used to be thankfully so I think I might be peri menopausal? My doctor only seems to want to give me contraceptives to sort out my hormones, despite me practically being so upset and tearful, I am very down most of the time anyway but they aren't very sympathetic.

My daughter (teenager) has terrible pain with hers and takes to her bed, she isn't very good with painkillers but occasionally I manage to get her to take one which helps. The microwaveable heat packs are good, my daughter has one of those cuddly toy style ones and I have a wheat pack I use when it's bad, they aren't too expensive. I don't think her proper cycle has kicked in yet though as she isn't regular yet. I should probably look at some homeopathic stuff to help her rather than painkillers.

I hope you find something that helps you.
  • so refreshing to read a post that makes me feel normal, mine always have been rough, at college i became a regular in the nurses office every month, in agony and puking my guts up.
now i get really bad days every other month also get the most awful upset stomachs. only recently read that this is common.
most months i have 2 days of having to use both supersize tampax and towels to have any hope of leaving the house, i flood the bathroom while getting dry after a shower. for the last year or so i also find i get really bad labor like cramps then pass big clots (big enough to actually feel them leaving my body ) think i may look into moon cups or similar,

to the OP i hope you go to your gp, maybe try a different on and get sorted out. i know how hard it is and mine are not a fraction as bad as yours.

Is it that she can't swallow tablets? You can get liquid suspension for adults, just ask the pharmacist. Better though would be to sit down with a tube of Smarties and teach her to swallow pills. There may be times in the future she will need to be able to take medication in tablet form without worrying about swallowing it so it's a valuable life skill.

As a bloke, can I ask : Why do women deny that PMT exists ?

I ask because for 4 days before my wife rants like a possessed nutter, but when asked about it afterwards in a moment of calm, denys that she ever had PMT, EVER, and tells me that if she was ever angry, it's all my doing.

as a woman, my advice would be to say 'yes dear' and never ever say 'you're just hormonal' unless you want things thrown at you .

  • It's unfair really. If a bloke was like that towards women they'd be practically lynched by society.

Well, not all woman experience problems, and not all woman deny it. I for example don't really have any symptoms before. I get tearful and upset sometimes during but that's about it. However most woman feel extra sensitive around that time, emotions and hormones all over the place. So allowances need to be made. There's woman commenting on there experiences here http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/premenstrual-syndrome/Pages/Introduction.aspx. Maybe that page will also help you and your wife.

My chemist recommended me buscopan - it's designed for ibs, but is marvellous for period cramping too.

Oh thanks, I will look into it.:) I did see online yesterday that Boots Period Pain Relief is rated quite highly by some women.

I'm wondering if the recent painful periods are related to me being perimenopausal and wondered if the doctor would check my hormone levels. I think my mother had that done to see if that was the reason affecting her moods, turns out it was just her real personality.:rotfl:

And not been fobbed off by a male GP? I have a fab male GP who has been super supportive of my undiagnosed problems but even he didn't seem to know with the mini-pill there is no such thing as 7 day breaks
