What have Royal Mail done wrong?
Surely it should be the Post Office that your annoyance is aimed at.
It's not their fault either. This is something imposed by new air freight regulations. Quite a lot of domestic post goes by air.

Are they really going to turn people away if they don't disclose the exact contents of a package?
    Can they?
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Well is it really reasonable for them to demand this information in absolute detail? Especially given they essentially have the monopoly; its them or a courier, which is a different service really.

Custardy has a point, all carriers have tjhe right to refuse whatever they want really.
Beyond post services, airlines ask you what you have in your suitcase, and refuse certain items.
    I could go on....
  • The flaw surely is that batteries can be small and thin items so a lot qualify for large letter and can be put in a postbox, so no question as to contents is asked.

If it was advertised and posters etc put up then people would be aware when they are packing items at home rather than feeling harassed which some customers clearly do now.

sigh, you realise this is a safety issue?
Monopoly? what you mean is cheaper service given you have an option

Let's be honest, huge quantities of clocks, watches, calculators, torches, electronic toys and games, not to mention batteries themselves are being sold on-line and sent via RM, every day. [That's just the sort of stuff that immediately comes to mind].

Sure, RM can prohibit batteries, but it's unenforceable... unless everything is to be x-rayed before it gets accepted at the counter... imagine the queues!!!

You can imagine it can't you.
PO Clerk "What's in the parcel"
    Customer " A diamond necklace - I sell on e-bay"
PO Clerk " You need special delivery"
    Customer "Fine"

Next day customer is on the way to the Post Office with another parcel, when they are mugged by someone further back in the line the previous day who had heard the conversation.

PO staff will deny culpability citing "we was only obeying orders"
