If you drink lots of semi skimmed milk, buy full fat instead and dilute it with an equal amount of water. You lose some of the vitamins but I reckon you'll get plenty elsewhere and you can't tell it's diluted. We used 6 four pint bottles a week, now only need 3, reckon that this saves us around £150 each year.

This one brought a few memories flooding back. A residential care home near here was closed down for 'cheating' the clients by all manner of penny-pinching while charging them top rates:eek: . The local paper was full of it for days with loads of angry letters published complaining about the treatment of the elderly residents. The main bone of contention (which seemed to upset people the most) was that they stooped so low as to water down the milk:eek:

Being that milk like non-fat milks are already watered down..doing so even more is just a joke.

    I can't believe it was done...at a top-rate place at that!

But then again...one must only remember back to university cafeteria days and wonder how much penny-pinching went on there...

When driving, try and change gear by 3000rpm as much as possible and always use 5th gear when you can. You'll be surprised at how much less fuel your car will use. I've found I get about 50-60 miles extra to a tank doing this rather than revving high.

  • My tip is to recycle papers and magazines in a reading context before they are recycled as waste. This will probably depend where you live, how your waste is managed and how easily you are embarrassed!

I live in a nice apartment block of 17, where our waste is kept neatly by management company staff in an enclosed and lit area. When taking my own waste down there, I will have a look through the newspapers and magazines that the other home owners have put there for recycling. I can do this discretely if I close the door and then return the stuff I read as part of my next visit.

Doing this I've got to read quite a few expensive glossy magazines I would never actually buy. I also get to enjoy the sunday papers as well. While the stuff I get to read maybe a few days old, I'm still getting reading matter for free. It's not theft, as the items have already been discarded and the environment doesn't miss out, as I just put them back for recycling the next time.

  • If you are about to boil an egg, check your kettle if there is any hot water left after making your tea/coffee and use it to fill your saucepan. Even sligthy warm water will take less time to boil and save you money.

    Same idea,.
If you have a couple of greasy plates or so to wash, instead of turning on the hot tap and filling the pipes with hot water, before you get any, use the hot water that's left in the kettle.
Just a little squeeze of Fairy liquid and again you've saved quite a bit more than the egg!

Also when you do fill your sink for washing up fill your kettle with the cold water and an extra jug or your watering can with the cold water yu would normally let run down the drain whilst waiting for the hot to come through.
