Hi there all you netto /aldi shoppers! I was wondering if you could share your information on these shops products, i.e. is their brand of washing up liquid as good as Fairy? I don't want to go out and spend money on their brands if they are useless! I'm on a budget! I'd stick with the brand names I know. So if any of you MSE's can give examples I would very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance for your advice and thank you for reading this x

Well ultimately it is down to personal preference and what you expect from your goods isn't it? I mean with washing (clothes) liquid say you have really greasy overalls possibly you might find brand x works better than brand y at cleaning the grease out. Me and the wife have just the two of us and very lightly soiled clothes to wash so our washing is mostly really freshening up. We have found all the washing liquids do the job. Netto are usually very poor for these, sometimes just stocking Persil liquid, which even at a recent promo of 2 for 5 quid is dearer than Tesco's own brand and dearer still than Aldi's.

If you are on a budget I wouldn't ''stick to the brands you know'' if you are a moneysaver. I have very little brand loyalty but over time there are a few (very few) things where I go for brands. I must admit one thing I do go for is Fairy washing up liquid, but having bought a bottle of 14p for 1ltr Somerfield Saver washing liquid for work I did note that Fairy is no way 8-9 times better (it is 8-9 times more expensive!) Three times better maybe but I should shake my brand loyalty as it costs me money. This loyalty has come from buying Morning Fresh for example at more than half the cost of Fairy and finding it half as good, but that 14p Somerfield stuff made me stop and think.

You do have to be prepared to try new things as a moneysaver. I could recommend a product but you might not like it but I might and thousands others will. It is all down to personal taste but you should try other brands as nothing ventured, nothing gained. Some you win, some you lose, but you build up experience and tastes and in time save more and more whilst consuming what YOU like.

Sticking to brands you know too much is not thrifty and not wise.

Going from the last post, I have always been brand loyal as far as clothes washing powder is concerned, esp as dd had eczema early on. So for the last 3 years bought fairy/persil exclusively. Then dh went and bought aldi washing tabs. I was amazed they are just as good and a fraction of the cost. Must admit still stick to lenor fab conditioner for the lovely smell tho'.

I agree with that. I personally am not too keen on Aldi products but like those from Lidl (we love their baked beans, but I'm sure many people here might disagree). So far there was only one item from Lidl that I didn't like, so I buy a dearer one.
Just buy one tin of something each time. If you like it, then buy more. If you don't, then stick to your original choice.

Yes that is good advice. You have to speculate to accumulate!

Interesting that you say you don't generally like Aldi products.... is this from recent experience? I ask as I feel that many have improved in the last few years. But like I said before, it is all down to taste and what I like you might not and vice versa. Aldi orange juice with bitsin the glass jars is bootiful tho and very cheap!

We have got a new Lidl but since it opened it has been plagued by roadworks for the new massive Tesco over the road! (a certain irony I thought!) You could get to it but have to divert for miles to get back.... and later vice versa! I think they have finished p*ssing about with that bit of the road now so will have to go and have a look at Lidl soon.

Re baked beans I remember a taste test years ago where Heinz came quite low down and a budget one was widely agreed to be the best. Just shows how many people blindly follow a brand (Heinz was best seller, but not judged by most peopleto be the best).

No, not from recent experience. A few years ago we didn't have a Lidl, so I drove to another town whre there were both shops. I tried Aldi, but didn't like it.
Now we've got a Lidl, so I don't bother even trying Aldi as I would have to drive there.

Strangely though, when in Germany I prefer Aldi to Lidl.

  • Instead of buying colouring books for your little one print off (at work if you can)
colouring pages of their favourite characters from the Cbeebies website

Ebay your money off coupons if you can't find use with them - I've been
successful with this in the past

A cheeky one - invite yourself around to parent's house for dinner - this one
is starting to wear a bit thin though!

Have a cheap meal night - something on toast, jacket spud

Using up what's in the freezer and just getting salad etc in your week's shopping
    to go with it.

Ask for vouchers/gift card from your favourite shop at Xmas/Birthday from everyone
and use it up gradually over the year for clothes etc rather than spending it all at once

Probably something every mse does anyway but ... fill up empty shower gel/bath foam
containers with water to get use out of those last dredges

Get a Costco account or find someone who has or get one and share it with a couple of friends
