Anyone rooted an Android phone?

Thanks for the replies, it sounds straightforward enough from what I've read.
Just to be clear - does the process just give you a higher level of access to your phone's operating system? All of the phone's functionality will continue to work exactly as before?0 -

Exactly. You can do exactly what you did before, but a lot more!0 -

That is all it does give you a much higher access to the very root of the OS .

I've rooted every phone I've had since putting Android on my HTC HD2! Always try to stick CyanogenMod on if it's supported as I can't stand the skins the manufacturers throw on there. I understand why they do it, just wish there was an option on the phone to revert to stock, instead of doing "Google Play" editions as they have with the S4 and HTC One.0

I normally root my phones. You do need to study the instructions carefully to make sure you understand them before you start.
Rooting is separate from unlocking. You can often find unlocking instructions in the same forums.0 -
Well, I gave it a go. Rooting appeared to work OK. Unfortunately, however, it turms out my Barclays mobile banking app won't work on rooted phones! As I use that a lot, I had no choice but to unroot again.
I gather from Googling that you can make some mods to a rooted phone to get an old version of the Barclays app working, but I'm not faffing around with that.0 -
