Anyone rooted an Android phone?

I know there's a load of info on this on sites like xda-developers, but has anyone on here actually done this? If so, did it go smoothly and were the results worthwhile? Any unwanted side-effects?
I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace on a Virgin monthly contract. Warranty expires soon so I'm not overly concerned about risking that. The phone is great but it's frustrating that I can't install many apps because of its limited space. I'm hoping that if I root it successfully, I'll be able to move some apps to the SD card and also uninstall some pre-bundled apps that I don't use.
Any thoughts welcome.

Ive rooted several. Just google how to root your model and follow the instructions really carefully. It's normally easy0

Very easy to do (and undo) I wouldnt hesitate in rooting a brand new phone in the future, well worth it for the extra apps you can use and unlocking a lot of features for your phone.
Once its rooted you can unlock it, move apps to SD etc, patch apps (to remove ads etc)Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
Might be worth your while looking at putting a custom ROM on it while you are at it if you want to remove all the pre bundled (cr)apps.
That will more than likely give you a lot more room on your phone..Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
I root all my phones as soon as possible when i get them.
Rooting a phone does not necesarily invalidate your warranty.
Normally very easy to do, just make sure that you read exactly what you need to do and then read again to make sure you get it.“Time is intended to be spent, not saved” - Alfred Wainwright0 -
I've not rooted my S3 yet, but i done it with my original HTC Desire for the same reasons at the OP. Not enough on board memory for apps and i couldn't force them all to SD card.
When you force install apps to the SD card you won't be able to use the widgets for them though.
As mentioned when rooted it might be worth looking into a new ROM as well. I liked Cyanogen mod. I had 7 on the Desire and had it overclocked with no problems and i've got 10 on my Nexus 7All your base are belong to us.0 -
As long as you follow the correct procedure for your particular phone and follow it step by step you would be unlikely to run into a problem.0

As rooting and custom roms void warranty for many .I suggest only root if you actually need it and be aware of how to return phone to stock and remove all traces of root .
The usual root problems are user fails to read / follow instructions . User flashes stuff for the wrong phone .
but by and large with the huge number of users who do root its relatively safe .
Not all phones allow transfer of apps to SD card by the way .

I'm a techie novice and managed to root my SG2 with no problems.
In total I probably spent about 8 or 9 hours reading one forum after another on how to root, doing the actual root via Odin takes less than a minute.
Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/ and also http://androidforums.com/ both sites have very useful information and step by step instructions on how to root.
I have Neat Rom Lite installed which I am really impressed with.0 -
I've rooted all of mine (and a few of others). Rude not too.0

I root all my phones and my partners. Weve also got all our tablets rooted as well.
Allows us to make full backups using apps such as MyBackUp Pro. Also allows you to "freeze" all the bloatware that some phones come with - thats if like me you dont want to install a custom rom.
Just make sure you read up on it. Once youve dont it once it gets easier each time!0
