If you're wanting 4 door, not too big but sat high up, then depending on the sort of space you'd like could be a fiat panda or for more space a C3 Picasso or Nissan Note. All available under £6000.
Engine choices would depend on how long your commute is/type of driving - start & stop inner city or a long motorway trip
All very sensible for s/hand buys.New Fiat Panda or Dacia Sandero
If rear interior space matters the Dacia is much better, if it is not so important try also the Chevrolet Spark.0 -
Picked up a 08 plate Jazz with 25k miles on the clock recently for around your budget - its the 1.2 version so pretty basic but its averaging around 47mpg on pretty much urban only driving (12 miles to work and same back plus pottering round town).Adventure before Dementia!0

It's factual with a touch of sarcasm although I have to say that my XJ8 is still on its original exhaust system after 15 years so I'd begun to think that "current" exhausts lasted forever.
Depends on how you use the car.
If you'd run the Jazz up and down the motorway every day, then I dare say that the exhaust would have lasted rather longer.0 -
get a ford focus, standard zetec should do 1.6 mabye 1.8 if you want a bit faster.
easy and cheap to run

I was wondering about a Prius. My workmate has an '11' plate model and gets 65-70 mpg trundling around town.
Others to consider are Meriva or Zafira. Scenic, Berlingo/Partner (paid £6k for my '08' Berlingo with 1.g HDi engine a month back, but would opt for petrol version with your journeies), Kangoo, Focus CMax, Ford Fusion.....
As you can see, there are a large number of vehicles to choose from.Never Knowingly Understood.
