We need to change the car. We want to get something for probably around £6000.

Would you buy a 'new' cheapish model of a second hand more expensive model.

My wish list is

A 4 door (had enough of climbing in and out of the back)

Economical to run.

A lowish insurance band

Last but not least- I want to see over flaming hedges, our current car is so low I feel as if Im sitting in the road.

Any suggestions gratefully received- thank you

Ford fiesta 1.4 petrol, or possibly a fiat panda.

Did you mean 'or' a second hand more expensive model?

Nosy are we? ;) Some people pay a LOT of money for cars that are low to the ground...

What sort of driving do you do? Short or long trips, and what sort of annual mileage?

OOOPS, yes I did mean 'or a'.

Yes I am nosy, but that not the reason that I want to see over hedges. We have had a little Ford Ka (no wonder we want to change it) and its only when getting in someone elses car that I realise how low ours is.

As a child I always had to go upstairs on the bus! perhaps that explains it!

As for driving, its mostly just work and back, shopping etc. About 4 or 5 times a year we do a 500 mile round trip but its mostly just the usual domestic stuff.

What other cars have you been in that you were happy with height-wise?

I was partly asking to pre-empt the petrol or diesel decision you'll have to make, but without knowing how far you have to travel to work I'm still rather guessing at your journey lengths and annual mileage!

It would be good if could give people a bit more of an idea of your requirements.

If you're wanting 4 door, not too big but sat high up, then depending on the sort of space you'd like could be a fiat panda or for more space a C3 Picasso or Nissan Note. All available under £6000.

Engine choices would depend on how long your commute is/type of driving - start & stop inner city or a long motorway trip
    Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)

    Savings target June 18 - £22,281.99 / £25,000

Thanks for the replies, sorry for not answering the questions.

I only work about 2 miles from home so on an average week we probably do no more than about 100 miles - that includes the shopping, popping here and there and so on.

If you are getting a newish car avoid diesels with a DPF filter as with that milage it will block and be costly to fix.

Until a week ago I'd have said "Honda Jazz" but ours has just developed an exhaust leak and I can see considerable corrosion of the exhaust system after a mere 8 years so it's blotted its copybook.
