We bought a Mazda 2 4 door model with approx that amount of money and have had zero problems with it in two years so far, 57 plate. It has sailed through MOTs. The mileage is pretty average though, definitely nothing to write home about, although it was 10 times better than our previous cars!

I have a 59 plate one bought new. You'd definitely get a four year old one (ie the age mine is now) within your budget. 47,000 miles, no faults so far, just replaced the original tyres. Fun to drive. My journey profile is very similar to the OP, lots of short (<10 miles) journeys with the occassional very long one. I get 45-50 mpg. I pay just over £200 a year insurance but RFL is not the cheapest (£95 I think) I have no plans to change it for several years yet.

Here's one just like mine (apart from the colour)within budget. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201302015153927/sort/default/usedcars/engine-size-cars/1l_to_1-3l/transmission/manual/quantity-of-doors/5/maximum-age/up_to_5_years_old/model/mazda2/make/mazda/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/page/1/keywords/tamura/radius/1501/postcode/sp61ej?logcode=p

    But there's one problem.......

Prius will probably set you back £3000-£4000 more than a same year medium petrol hatchback. I'm betting you won't save £3000-£4000 worth of fuel during ownership.......

I am also thinking about changing my car too and the one I have been considering is the 5 door Hyundai i20. The 1.2 petrol would be my choice. New models come with a 5 year warranty or if buying used, the balance of the warranty is transferred. Very economical. Spacious inside ( I am over 6ft and I had ample leg room), plenty of space in the back for three passengers. Ultra reliable. Low insurance group and £100 a year road tax. See Parkers Reviews on line for more info. The entry level new is around £8600 but I would opt for a two year old model. Happy hunting.

What other cars have you been in that you were happy with height-wise?

You haven't actaully answered this question yet. It would be helpful if you're looking to 4x4 type vehicles, or if a more standard car would be OK?

Until a week ago I'd have said "Honda Jazz" but ours has just developed an exhaust leak and I can see considerable corrosion of the exhaust system after a mere 8 years so it's blotted its copybook.

Is this comment serious or is it 'positive sarcasm'?

It's factual with a touch of sarcasm although I have to say that my XJ8 is still on its original exhaust system after 15 years so I'd begun to think that "current" exhausts lasted forever.
