I think books such as the "secret" seem to imply that there is an invisible force bringing our thoughts to us which is why it's important to be clear in our thoughts and specific.

Well. the OP doesn't seem inclined to explain but maybe this will help:

  • I don't know enough to elaborate; there appear to be two schools of thought; (a) think; feel and believe and you will have it; (b) think and act positive and it might happen.

If you see it in your mind, you're going to hold it in your hand.
    Thoughts become things!
What you think about you bring about!

  • I'm new to this forum and just stumbled accross this subject.I've been reading about LOA since 2006 and then a few years ago tried to put it to the 'test'. I tried to attract some unbelievable things basically just to prove to my self it works. And it does work to the point that it almost blows your mind and there is no logical way to explain certain circumstances,events- very strange. On the whole it was not a very good experience, as all the things I wanted and achieved turned out to be a bit of a nightmare in the long run. The lesson I learned is be carefull what you wish for and maybe we are not meant to be playing God

TBH, I think there is a lot to be said for having a positive attitude and being optimistic, although these need to be followed up with action if you want any chance of your attitude bearing fruit. And also at least a rudimentary understanding of probability/chance/indeterminism (e.g. if you strongly believe you will win the lottery jackpot on Saturday AND you buy a ticket for it, you know that you are still highly unlikely to win).

That said, I also think there is a very ugly side to the 'law of attraction'. The idea that those who find themselves in desperate poverty, those whose families got washed away in a tsunami etc etc. only have themselves to blame for their negative thinking and thus are undeserving of sympathy/help. (The Secret (a disgusting, pseudo-scientific, money-making scam) advises you to keep away from such people as their negative 'energies' will impact on you too). Caveat lector!
Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one. :)

Can you give a couple of examples?

You're not the first person I've heard say this, as the poster above said can you give a few examples?

I'm all for positive thinking in terms of working positively towards a specific goal. If you don't achieve it, at least you know you've tried everything. Depending what the goal is, it can mean years of hard work and slog

I had an interesting discussion once with a religious colleague about the power of prayer. I'm not religious, but to me that's more passively wishing and hoping rather than actively doing something. And isn't that akin to The Secret by Rhonda Byrne? http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Secret-Rhonda-Byrne/dp/1847370292
