Positive thinking is just a state of mind... not magic.

When you are positive, you notice the negative stuff less. It doesn't mean the negative things stop happening... you just view them in a different way.

This attitude can be a negative in itself though... like a gambling addict who only remembers the 'big win' and forgets all of the losses.

I am a great believer in being positive HOWEVER that will not attract positive events... it just mean that you view those events more positively.

Negative people still win the lottery and positive people still succumb to cancer.

It can if the changes you make in yourself show to other people - you may get a job that would have gone to someone else because you appear positive and determined to do well or you may get into a relationship with someone who likes your positive approach to life.

It's not some magical stuff - if you change, you can change the world around you.

As Tiddly says, that's not going to influence things like winning the lottery or being knocked over by a drunk driver or other random events.

What about the concepts in books such as "The Secret" that advise all you need to do is change your outlook and vision what you want and let the laws of life do the rest?

You'll probably be waiting a long time if that's all you but I don't think it's possible to change your thinking without changing your behaviour.

By concepts you mean "pseudo-science nonsense for the weak-minded"?

When I opened this thread I thought it would be a discussion on the inverse square law. I'm still non the wiser.

I get increasing frustrated with people thinking there is some quick fix to success.

Firstly, success is relative... to some it is marrying a football player, starring in reality TV or whatever. To others, it is to have a happy family life with enough to be comfortable.

Yes, looking and feeling positive will make you look more confident and make you more likely to see change as an opportunity BUT, unfortunately, it will not mean that you live a long and prosperous life where nothing bad ever happens.

Stuff happens... it's how you react to it that matters and that can be influenced by your personality and outlook on life... but that stuff will happen.

The difference being that your link is to real science and this thread is about... you tell me?

  • Hi All,

I've spoken to some people regarding this as of late and read a little as well as watching videos on Youtube, however does it work or is success related to it simply coincidental?

I happen to believe in the power of positive thinking. I believe that negativity breeds negativity and positive thinking does the same. I'm not saying it can stop debt or poverty or cancer etc but I am saying that being in a certain mindset can help you find the strenght to deal with whatever life circumstances you are facing.

The mind is a powerful thing, you can talk yourself into utter fear and you can talk yourself into fixing the biggest problems you face.

There was an article in the press the other day about the placebo affect in reverse. If you tell someone they have a condition that they don't really have they are able to believe they are getting ill and can even be known to getting some of the symptoms of the illness they've been told they have.

Psychology isn't voodoo, it's science of the mind.
Some times you have to hold back to go forward to where you want to be.
