Our results, which appear robust to different specifications, different levels of geographic aggregation, and to a number of tests, seem to confirm the lack of any impact of migration on unemployment in aggregate.

We find no association between migrant inflows and claimant unemployment.

In addition, we test for whether the impact of migration on claimant unemployment varies according to the state of the economic cycle.

We find no evidence of a more adverse effect during periods of low growth or the recent recession.

    And....
A considerable body of UK evidence now exists on the impact of immigration on native labour market outcomes, particularly employment and wages.

Most of this work suggests that, on average, the impact of immigration on native residents has been small.

Virtually no published study has found any significant impact on employment or unemployment.

And just for you Graham.... ;)
In addition to expanding labour supply, immigration can also increase the demand for labour.

Migrants expand consumer demand for goods and services.

In the medium to long run, immigration can be expected to lead to more investment.

Both effects result in greater demand for labour and thus increased wages and employment in the economy.

In other words, the number of jobs in an economy is not fixed (“the lump of labour fallacy”)

So immigration "can be expected to" lead to more investment, yet hasn't even after the last decade of mass immigration?

It's all a bit too much like jam tommorow for my liking. As for the migration observatory, could you get a more pro immigration facility if you tried?

S As for the migration observatory, could you get a more pro immigration facility if you tried?

"The Migration Observatory is a part of Oxford University’s Centre on Migration Policy and Society (COMPAS) and as such adheres to the very highest standards of academic rigour. It draws on a range of experts from a variety of disciplines throughout Oxford University.

Migration Observatory is completely independent and does not aim to achieve any policy goal. The objective of the Observatory is to provide solid, fact-based analysis that can be used to inform all sides of the debate."

    That's not a "pro-immigration facility" Graham.

If they come across as such to you, it's because unlike most of the sources you quote, they report the evidence honestly and accurately and don't spin it for anti-immigration political purposes.

    Eh?

    Of course it has.

The quote you have provided is form the migration observatory themselves - of COURSE they are going to claim to be independent. Either this is another statement to suit your own agenda, or you have fallen for it hook line and sinker.

Migration observatory are far from objective. They are specifically involved in a leftist project called "changing minds" which has been set up as nothing more than political propaganda to change people's attitudes towards migration.

To claim any report by the migration observatory is not influenced is beyond ridiculous.

Labour MP Frank Field says the Observatory, part of the COMPAS think-tank at Oxford University, has been set up ‘to try to undermine’ MigrationWatch, a campaign group for stricter immigration controls.

So in no way based on publishing unbiased, honest information then - just more political manipulation.

    Summary
    1. The Daily Mail recently reported on the Diana Memorial Fund’s financing of a campaign supporting large scale
    immigration1
. We have now looked into this issue and found a systematic attempt by a small group of charities to
influence public opinion on immigration by a campaign entitled “Changing Minds”. They are, of course, free to act
in this way but the “Migration Observatory” which claims to be impartial is in fact a key vehicle in this campaign but,
while naming its funders on its website, does not mention its connection with this “Changing Minds” project
    . There
must be some question as to whether such activity is appropriate to a university.

    Unbiased.........????

    Fact based?

    You can't be serious.

    That's exactly it.

And McHamish only clings to their findings because he thinks house prices will go up.

It's really all a load of b0ll0x and not worth arguing about.

    A "leftist project"....:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

You're talking about philanthropy by the Rowntree foundation, the Barrow Cadbury Trust, and the Princess Diana memorial fund for heavens sake.

And quite right that they should be looking to inform debate about migration, given that the British public are usually woefully uninformed about the facts and evidence on a variety of important topics.

If you actually believe the University of Oxford is producing deliberately biased academic research as part of a lefty conspiracy to generate political propaganda, there is something very seriously wrong with you.
