safe way to get rid of a electric socket.

I have a electric socket that I no longer use, it was for the electric fire in a fireplace I no longer have the fire place but have the two seperate sockets which look out of place. I will use blanking plates but need as I may wish to use again in future.

What is the safest way of making the electric wires safe for putting blanking plates over them?

If you are using a blanking plate you can just join them with 30A insulated terminal block. Make sure they are appropriately joined (live to live, line to line and earth to earth) though rather than just individually terminated otherwise you will lose downstream connectivity.

If, however, you were planning on plastering over (I know you aren't but for completeness) then a connecting block or junction box would not be allowed and the wires would have to be properly crimped and insulated prior to being plastered over.

connecting blocks are probably the way forward, unless its just a spur then the conductors will just need insulating.
If its a ring then just join the wires together with the blocks, and cover with the blanking plate

I don't understand the need to use a blanking plate.

Its the same protrusion as the socket

Leave all as is, you said you my want to use again. A non switched socket performs the same function as a blank plate until you plug something in, plug it with a child proof blank if there is a need :A:A:A
    .

Sorry Cy but I don't even have to look at Myser's link to know that its going to say that those things are actually downright dangerous if kids are around.

OPs question was "what is the safest way". The answer is the same as Post 2. Sorry.

    Cheers

No issue, neither with you Myser, but is this socket out of harms way? ie not where kids will play with it?????

I also have to say the OP doesn't seem to have any immediate issues re the sockets, they are no different to any other in use or out of use ones in the house?

Please feel free to correct me..

To finalise if there are no issues with access to the sockets, leave them active and add covers, any issues with kiddy fingers. then blank plates.

If it has a plug it is safer than if it doesn't??, but not child proof

If I said childproof, it was an error,:o:o, I for 1 know nothing is actually childproof, fortunately I have the grandkids that have proven and survived that my statement is true;);) Child resistant is a better way of describing it.

Lordy Cy - are you actually saying that one of your grandkids got a belt off a socket even with one of those things in it but as he/she survived then the wretched things are OK? Please do put me straight but thats how your post reads.

    Cheers

Err no, I said my kids/grandkids survived, open or closed sockets.

    Checkout parent responsibility KS

Repeat as I tried to infer, nothing is childproof

You need to enlighten my as to what I said in words, not your imagination, would endanger anyone??

The Op didn't mention kids, Idid, child proof? , my mistake, try child resistant

If your, or anyone else's kids stick nails or pencils in sockets, they will do it on the worktop, not in a disused socket out of reach. end of.

    Juess, you all want blood?
