    Does it blue screen?

Restart, continually tap F8 and when you reach Advanced Boot Options menu, choose "Disable Automatic Restart on system failure". Restart once more and if it blue screens make a note of the error message.

    Run chkdsk

CHKDSK - How to run from the Recovery Console

    Yes it blue screens.

'A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer'
    UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Then it goes on to say about installation of hardware/software.
Just before my problem started I kept getting 'Low disk space' messages appearing.

I deleted about two or three things, the last time I used it.

You may need to do a full recovery - which will require you doing a back up of your personal data . . .

This will restore it to perfect working condition however!

    I have burned the CD.

Put it into the computer and I get a blue screen.

    WINDOWS XP ROFESSIONAL SET-UP

    Welcome to set up.

This portion of the set up program prepares Microsoft(R) Windows (R) XP to run on your computer.

    * To set up Windows XP now, press enter
    * To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery console, press R.
*To quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

I tried option 2, it tells me to type EXIT and restart the computer.

The computer restarts a blue screen appears, set up options run at the bottom of the screen, then I get the set up message again.

    What now, please?

I now have a black screen that reads:

    Insert the CD labelled:

Windows XP Profesional Service Pack 2 CD into your CD-ROM drive.
    *Press enter when ready.

When you choose option 2, as well as "type EXIT and restart the computer", do you not see "which windows installation would you like to log on to"?

    No.

Type EXIT to quit the Recovery console and restart the computer.

    C:\

After the \ there is an arrow pointing to the right.

Looks like the drive has died.

    At the C:\ prompt type:

    chkdsk C: /r

    Then press enter.

    Note the spaces.

    chkdsk_c:_/r
