When I switch on my PC I get a continuous message on a black screen which reads as follows:
We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) Start Windows Normally
Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
Seconds until starts: 30
What do I need to do?
Thank you.

I've tried each suggestion, but none of them work.
I'm using Windows XP.
I'm at work at the moment and not due to be back home until 2pm.
So cannot try any other suggestions until then.0 -
Does it blue screen?
Restart, continually tap F8 and when you reach Advanced Boot Options menu, choose "Disable Automatic Restart on system failure". Restart once more and if it blue screens make a note of the error message.
Run chkdsk
CHKDSK - How to run from the Recovery Console0 -
Only if I keep tapping the F8 button, which then asks me to select one of two modes. I can't remember at the moment what they are.
It didn't show the message you are suggesting, I don't think. But when I get home I will check.
Thanks0 -
You may be pressing it a little early, wait till the BIOS post ends and start immediately after that.0
