neutering ? I dont get it ?

Hi I just wondered what peoples opinions on neutering are I have an 8 week old springer puppy hes a lovely calm temperament I just wondered what the benefits are supposed to be as some people immediately say oh you want to get him done at 6 months. Is it to calm dogs down or stop them humping things I dont think I understand the benefits I dont intend to mate him but im not at all sure I like the idea of un necessarily putting him through an op. Hes a pure bred and his dad obviously hasnt been done hes a lovely dog too very calm and well trained I hear people say it calms them down but I dont understand if the dog is calm anyway whats the benefit ?

Any help is great im totally new to dogs and a bit confused.

Your best bet is to go do some research on tinterweb, and make your own mind up. Look for things such as " effects of neutering an entire male dog", and you should come up with loads of stuff.
For my money, neutering doesn't calm most male dogs down, there have been some studies done on the subject, it will depend where you look, most rescue sites will have you believe your the owner from hell( and some vets too) if you don't neuter.
I have had previous males neutered at three years , and honestly can't say as there was any difference , except one became a lot more clingy and was lesser for it.
The only thing neutering in a male will guarantee is he won't sire any puppies and he won't get testicular cancer.

Its mostly to try and reduce the numbers of unwanted dogs that are put down every year, and to make sure the only breeding that happens is done responsibly and ethically.

Personally, I'm not a vet, but there are two reason I would always neuter a male dog:

    1. So they don't have to spend their lives feeling urges and drives they can't actually do anything about. Trying to escape, wanting to run across motorways to get to a potential mate etc.

    2. So that I can let them off the lead. I think its irresponsible to let the vast majority of entire males off lead as you can't rely on owners of entire b!tches to keep them safe when they're in season.

Oh, and one of mine had to be done regardless of my opinion as one testicle was undescended which increases the risks massively and needs sorting, just as it does in humans.

An 8 week springer at that! :rotfl:

OP, you've only just begun, you have no idea how mad that pup will drive you on occasion, it'll be fun though I promise!

How would feel if you were never able to have sex? Neutering reduces their sexual urges, it also reduces their want to flee to find a mate, neutering also enables a dog to be off the lead around other dogs.

Neutering for some dogs does calm them down, for most if done before the humping phase will stop them becoming humpers, it also stops them developing testicular cancers, which is more common in dogs that aren't 'active'.

This was biggie for me, I can't stand humping dogs, also not being able to give them the freedom to roam offlead in case they get a whiff of a b!tch in heat and it seems very cruel to keep a dog entire if he's never going to be able to mate anyway.

Bear in mind that humping often has nothing to do with sexual behaviour. In puppies and young dogs especially, it is much more likely to be due to excitement - nothing sexual. It can also (occasionally) be a sign of dominance.

Some of the worst humpers I've known have been neutered females, I've only know one male who was a humper , who was just as bad after castration, he did confine his lusts to a manky old teddy bear though. He still does it to this day and he's ten now.
