Games..walkthroughs on Youtube?

Options
I was checking out the PS3 gaming forum when I came across a 'walkthrough' for' The Last of Us' the latest game just out.!

I was going to buy this game so curiosity got the better of me and clicked on the link.

I watched every episode of the game, yes I did feel guilty as I disapprove of anyone trying to cheat the Manufacturers out of money.

Having said that, I have decided I do not need to buy the game, so very MSE and saved myself some cash.!

Dilemma...should people be stopped from videoing their games and putting them on youtube?

Not at all. If anything most companies would see it as free advertising. I have bought countless games after watching 'walkthroughs' on YouTube.

They're useful for those of us who can get stuck from time to time, but I wouldn't substitute the gaming experience for watching videos - in the case of the mentioned game I'll do the same with that as I did with Heavy Rain! (wait a few months & buy it when the price drops)

Thing is there's a large amount of secondary purposes - mostly machinma (I think that's what it's called), stuff like music video parodies etc. While I can see why some producers may be miffed, I know others actually enjoy the fact their consumers are as creative with the product.

Play throughs are generally very popular on YouTube. Someone plays the game whilst commentating on it. PewDiePie for example has 10mil subscribers and all he does is upload play throughs. Now say that 3mil of his 10mil subscribers hadn't heard of the game but can see that he plays it and that the game looks fun, sales would surge.

I can just about condone a written walkthrough for the digitally challenged, but I wish I'd never discovered the existence of these blasted things!! I think that they ruin a game immensely - the fun of a game is the challenge, and not knowing what's going to happen next. Long gone are the days of being stuck on one part of a game for days at a time, and long gone also are the days of relentless persistence - now, all you have to do is hop onto YouTube and the fat lady sings on command.

I mean, what was the point of buying the game in the first place if all you were going to do was piggyback on someone else's glory?

OP, you saved yourself an experience in addition to the cash.

I think it is fair to say that people buy and play games for different reasons. Some people do enjoy the challenge, and those people are less inclined to be looking up walkthroughs on YouTube. Some people play more for the storyline than the challenge, preferring to play the game on a low difficulty setting so that they can experience the narrative and not be delayed too much be difficult sequences and so these people are also less likely to look up videos on YouTube because they won't want spoilers.

Then there are those people who play games for mindless entertainment - they just want to shoot a few things, conquer a few settlements, lead their club to the Champions League and don't care about challenges or narratives, they're just trying to stave off a few hours of boredom - and they will use walkthroughs, cheat codes, trainers, saved game editors etc. to do that and if that's how they find their entertainment then I don't really see a problem with it. For them, and for the rest of us, I would view the point of buying the game being to have fun.

Now, if someone plays for the challenge and/or narrative and still can't stop looking at guides that deter them from the games, that's just an issue of willpower. Most games I play I do so primarily for the storyline, the same reason I watch films and most TV shows and I always refrain from looking up anything that is likely to contain a spoiler.

Nintendo recently said they're going to start claiming the advertising revenue for playthroughs of their games. I do think it's a bit out of order that YouTubers get to make money out of playing a game and recording it but if that's what people want to watch then so be it.

You've obviously never played Skyward Sword then...far too much naffing about on that one on side quests, mini games and stupid distances.

I like the walkthroughs, there's a guy called "GameChap", or Adam to his mum, who does a hilarious Ocarina of Time 3D walkthrough...its half instructional, half hysterical and I have to admit I find myself nipping on for a bit of gamechap if I'm bored of running through Hyrule field for the 39th time, even though I know the game inside out.

But some of them are just a bit silly, and I would only ever watch a walkthrough post purchase anyway - I've used them in the past for tricky glitches and tricks.

Seems odd that watching a video of someone else playing a game could be a substitute for actually playing the game yourself.

It's like going to a circus and watching everyone else having fun on rides and then not going on any. Or watching a documentary on Hawaii and then at the end saying 'that was a fun holiday, I just saved myself some money' :D

Play the game, it's way more fun than youtube walkthroughs! :)

A play through video might give you the story. But the game isn't just about the story. It's fun to play a game. If everyone felt the same way as OP then no on would ever play games we'd just watch films and TV. But gaming is booming and cinema is struggling.
