You are guessing what the rep has said, they may have asked.. Or how about this a Neighbour may have voluntered that information willingly,, You have any curtain twitchers about? they will often tell you anything about anyone!

If you are paying by Standing Order, then that is Your Instruction to Your Bank. Whilst it may not suit what the energy company wants from you They WILL NOT REJECT any payments that you make assuming all the reference details are correct.

They havent underestimated your usage, you have either used more than what was budgeted or the Tariff \ Prices have been increased so do not reflect what is being consumed.

If it was a direct debit then they should have acted to increase that in line with Meter Readings. But if that is not being regularly done, then there will be these catch up bills..

I have complained to them about it.

If you get nowhere have a look at complaining to the information commisioners about any data protection issues and / or the Energy ombudsman.

You appear to be a "vulnerable customer" & there is supposedly protection in place for you - have a look at the energy retail association guidelines

As to taking out of your benefits / fuel direct it would only be about £3.60 off the debt plus your ongoing consumption, no need to worry about topping up, callers chasing money, adjusting standing orders when things change etc, I'd have thought that is probably your best bet.

If in doubt someone such as CCCS (have a presence on here), CAB or a legal advice centre could offer you free help

Perhaps you could also try applying for an energy trust grant to clear the debt if you are otherwise able to sustain future payments given your circumstances / health issues & the apparently low / supplier calculated payment requests leading upto it.
