  • For those of you that don't find it filling - switch to an egg-based breakfast instead. Eggs are apparently proven to satisfy longer than carbs.

Gigervamp - it's not likely to be the fat and protein in the meat, it's likely to be the carbs in the pastry and the cereal-based bulking agents used in processed snack products :(

I wish I could get over the taste of porridge. It really puts me off.

I tried it once. Hated it. I ended up adding so much extra stuff to make it edible, that I may as well have just eaten a couple of Pop Tarts.

Il be honest, i haven't gotten as far as tasting it!
    The smell stopped me :o
It was once of those 'nice' porrige pots with honey and strawberry flavouring, but all i could smell was a hot damp-type smell :(

Porridge looks a bit too much like sick for my liking. I just can't get past the look/texture of it..yuck.

My toddler loves it though. had a big bowl sweetened with banana every morning :D

...which is exactly what it tastes like.

I'm fairly sure that I tried adding jam, honey, sugar, various fruits and cocoa powder. By the time I'd added the second ingredient I knew that it was so unhealthy that there was no way I'd eat it daily anyway, but I kept pushing on and adding more just to see WHEN it would be worth eating.

I never got there. It seemed to absorb everything like a slime monster, and leave none of the flavour behind. It was, as far as I'm concerned, like eating a warm cardboard box that had been left out in the rain overnight.

I presume it's a sign of the times that most people seem to have to sweeten their porridge. :(

My porridge is made with oats, water and salt to taste. Served with milk.
    Tasty and nutritious.

I love porridge, but I have to admit that it does need something added as otherwise it just tastes like wet cardboard!:rotfl:

My favourite addition is demarara sugar.

I try to provide a healthy diet for myself and my sons. We eat a lot of fresh meat, fish, vegetables and salad. We also eat pasta, rice and bread. The boys enjoy fruit. Drinks for them mainly consists of milk or water. Occasionally they will have fruit juice but I water this down. I encourage my children to have a rich and varied diet. I think this will enable them to understand about and to want to lead a healthy lifestyle later on in their lives.

I try to cook all meals from scratch. That way I know the quality of the ingredients I am using. It also gives me control over the cooking methods and how much fat and salt goes into our food. I am also careful to give sensible portion sizes. Kids are kids and they do enjoy fast food now and again, but this is a treat. Snacks for the most part tend to be healthy, but I give them chocolate and sweets too. Everything in proportion.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

Im probably the only scot alive who hates porridge. I bought some of the aldi stuff a few weeks back thinking as it had fruit and nuts in it, Id be ok.

It took me two days to eat it. My mum on the other hand loves it and also loves it with salt on.

I do like oatcakes though, just not porridge.

I couldn't abide porridge either. On the few occassions I tried it, it tasted like I imagine wallpaper paste would. Then for health reasons I had to learn to love it. Am still working on my water/milk ratio -got it to about 50/50 but can't manage it without fruit. I keep frozen berries in for this purpose. Haven't tried anything other than Quaker oats yet though, am a bit wary of doing so, in case I dislike other brands.
I agree with eggs being the other most filling breakfast you can have. Had that today, I can't associate porridge with the current warm weather!

Porridge is disgusting. Not too bothered about the taste, it's that slimy texture that makes me heave :(.

I am the complete opposite of all you virtuous, good parents I'#m afraid. My kids (now 16 & 17) have always chosen what to eat. The only rule is that I don't EVER make more than one meal, so they must both agree. I do NOT see the point in cooking one meal for one and a different one for the other. This compromising has always led to rather good choices, because one child is a huge fan of fish and meat whilst the other prefers Veg and Salad, so we get a good mix.

For breakfast they will eat a HUGE bowl of whatever the newest chocolatey cereal is available. Hey Ho.

Lunch is sandwiches or Sushi with crisps, chocolate and still drink.

Home from school they grab a fizzy drink (and an Ice lolly in the current climate)

Dinner is home-made because we enjoy cooking / creating recipe's. Last few days have been: Roast Dinner, Pasta Carbonara with leftover chicken, Fajita's, Sea Bass with new pots and salad, HM Lasagne. One child has a chocolate mousse for pudding, the other a small cup of sweets to chew.

For supper they tend to ferret around - one child normally seizes a chunk of bread with some fruit (red grapefruit is the favourite at the moment), the other goes for another bowl of cereal.

Both kids are a normal weight, do well at school and they have one small filling between them.

I love them to bits and am very proud of the adults they are becoming. When they get a bit of spare money, they don't spend it on sweets to scoff in secret (like their friends do at the bus stop every morning!!!) because nothing is banned in my house.

I realise it's more luck than judgement that they've turned out so well. I'm sure the people who puree fruit into ice cube trays have probably shuddered in horror at how my kids are fed, but each to their own eh? Life's definitely too short....
