I think you should thank your MIL for her opinion, ask her for menu-suggestions and then carry on doing what you think is best. If she wants to pop round to do all of your shopping and cooking for you I expect you'd welcome being able to put your feet up once in a blue moon.

Porridge is very filling on its own - I have a bowl of porridge with fruit before 7am and it lasts me until 12.30-1pm - so I would consider dropping the toast/jam sandwiches altogether.
I repeatedly read this about porridge - that it is mega filling and indeed many seem to agree with you. However,I have it every morning (made with water and no salt just added sliced banana) and am ravenous 1.5 hrs later.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

Yes this, it doesn't do it for me either and I make it with skimmed milk with a little dried fruit. It does warm me up in winter though.

Me neither. I still always need my second breakfast.

I agree with this. The idea of parents criticising their son or daughter's parenting skills annoys me immensely. You've had your chance, these aren't your children, stop it.

My mother's pet criticism at the moment is that my kids are neglected because... wait for it... they're clean! And by clean I don't mean I'm obsessively chasing them around with a baby wipe and antibac spray - I mean that I don't do snot icicles stuck to faces and hands and faces get a wipe down after meals.

Part of me really would like her to try ringing social services with this concern just to be a fly on the wall over the phonecall about what seemed to be the problem... "Well.. they're... they're... CLEAN"

To the people who don't find porridge filling - do you get porridge in sachets or do you use porridge oats? I do admit my porridge portion in the morning is very generous - maybe that's why I find it filling? Maybe it also depends on how thick you like your porridge. DH likes his so thick you can almost slice it.

I do agree some people may need a bigger breakfast than just porridge. My DH always has porridge / cereals followed by two slices of toast with jam. For kids, however, porridge should be enough.

A decent portion made with whole milk and proper oats rather that finely ground stuff which is digested too easily - the people who get hungry are possibly not eating enough.

Proper oats and a decent portion for me and nice and thick: would make an excellent papier mache sculpture:D.
To be honest, the only breakfast that keeps me full for long is protein one but at the mo I just enjoy the porridge. I make it with water now, but I was just the same when I used to make it with milk.

I tried it once. Hated it. I ended up adding so much extra stuff to make it edible, that I may as well have just eaten a couple of Pop Tarts.
