BTW I never buy a car with only one key; they cost too much to replace and program nowdays.

We bought a 2001 MINI which has the BMW spec wiring.

We had one remote key, and I was tasked with obtaining a second.

After some serious investigation, it became clear that there was alot of smoke and mirrors, and EVEN MINI staff will try and confuse you. But all thanks to the nice lady at Williams Liverpool, in the parts department, who explained that I could have another remote key for £130 plus service time to reprogram both my keys, call it £200, or I could have a Spare Key for £43 which you have to actually put in the door :T and unlock it, which operates the central locking, and then put it in the ignition.

All they need is the V5 and some proof of identity, and they order is using the VIN.

A high street key cutter will do a non remote car key with chip for about £25.
