new solar panels

The OP is starting off on the wrong foot by confusing solar PV and solar hot water.
A Shade Greener are seling solar PV via 'rent a roof'. What his neighbour appears to have installed is a solar hot water system.
.
I don't think his neighbour has solar thermal(hot water) as he stated:A neighbour has them in from the same company and he says his electric bill have reduced by around a quarter pm and he has managed to cut his gas bill by a third too.
However this is quite typical of the totally exagerated savings some people claim.
Whilst it is feasible, but unusual, to cut electricity bills by a quarter, there is no way gas bills could be cut by a third.0 -
There have been a number of posts on MSE about this situation with one running currently.
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/469265
Also a lot of reports in the national media as the A Shade Greener representative acknowledged.
Exactly what I was trying to say, there may have been an issue with a smaller lender (Skipton), but anyone now trying to get a mortgage would have no such issue yet the rumours go on.
There is currently no issue with any building society or bank I know of with any solar rent a roof scheme.
Maybe there is another tiddler in the south or a company who have not quite sorted the wording out right but we are talking in extremely rare situations for most company's and banks there is no issue.0 -

Depends, what if he has a meter with no backstop?
My mate is in this situation and was planning to leave his cooker on as his latest reading is lower than Feb's lol
old meter and solar are very common around here York's I have seen two today.0 -

So how would that help with gas bills?0 -

Skipton was just an example.
The OP in that thread I posted is obviously having a problem - doesn't matter if the company have it wrong, he has a probem and has lost his sale.
Several have reported on MSE they have experienced problems. IIRC one person worked for a Building society.
I think it is a bit of a sweeping statement to say that because you don't 'know of' issues, that problems don't exist.

And many posts like this:
I agree. But 'making it harder to sell' equates with 'selling for a lower price'
In my mind, I can't see the value of the free electricity ever
coming near to the drop in the value of the house over any time period at all.
I wouldn't consider any future property with rar panels for other reasons, as well as those you mentioned. As well as surveyors putting buyers off, solicitors will too in the future imv. They work for the benefit of the buyers who pay them, so will have to report back on the tenant sitting on their roof, and how the property isn't being sold free and uncumbered, and how this may affect a future sale when the current buyer comes to sell.
The scale of the risk to the scale of the benefit seems completely out of kilter. I mean, £70 per year must be a very small return for anyone - the child benefit for one child is approaching that much per week for example iirc, and balanced against that is a risk your proprty may have to be priced 5% lower in order to sell.

Because he could be turning his boiler off and using the immersion to heat his water! So how would that help with gas bills?
If his meter is running backwards the fact that he's using more than he's generating over the few hours he's running his immersion won't impact what he's importing as long as he's generating more over a day, on average, than the immersion is using.Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endQuidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur0 -
We will have to agree to differ over PV rent a roof, as I said I know of no large surveying firm (Countrywide, Connells), etc or major bank b/s (Halifax, Nationwide, Abbey), etc having any issue whatsoever. Sheffield is a hot bed for solar (maybe close to 1in 15 houses), would be my estimation and a large percentage have rent a roof schemes.
It just seems that this issue of mortgages has been blown up out of all proportions D.Mail style when very very few folk will ever have an issue.
It reminds me of folk warning you not to have ice on your holiday. The rumour still goes around yet the issue was 20-30yrs ago.0 -

It is absolutely valid advice in some countries in the world. Egypt and parts of India to name but two.
Just about every website on holiday health precautions includes that advice. e.g.
http://well-beinglounge.orion.fi/en/wellness-studio/well-being-themes/diet-and-stomach-discomfort/avoiding-diarrhoea-on-holidayClean water is the most important factor of all in preventing abdominal complaints, especially diarrhoea. If you are not sure whether the mains water is clean and drinkable, you should always drink bottled water. If you don’t know
whether ice cubes have been made from bottled water or not, you should ask for your drink without ice.0 -

Again you proof my point, millions go away on holiday to med destinations with absolutely no risk but a very small percentage may be of risk in some less popular places. Yet folk still won't have ice or eat salad in Spain because of a daft rumour they heard 30yrs ago lol.
It's time for the rent a roof mortgage myth to buried but I bet we still hear the same warnings in 10yrs time.0 -
surely now is the time for installation of Solar Panels?
Great returns, and lovely weather
