If the op is going to have heating a grass roof is the only way to go.

Are you sure they will want a conservatory if it's stifling in the summer?

    A grass roof???

    I'll reprint what the OP 1st said;

"Right I want a conservatory and and 2 local firms plus the chap who used to own a conservatory company, who fitted our kitchen to come and give us quotes this week."

Sounds pretty set on a conservatory to me:D, but then again everyone else is set on changing his mind ;);)

It does all depend on aspect, my conservatory is free standing and away from the house, technically it's an orangery not a conservatory. Gets sunlight almost every hour of the day.

Opaque roof and I've just been in there for 10 mins to water the plants (again), exactly 40c and I've just had to wring my clothes out .

If he wants a conservatory he wants a conservatory, but I do agree unless it faces North west ish, it will get extreme heat.

And he might just want it as a greenhouse, who knows;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

I don't think the heat is too much of a problem, unless it is south facing, as on the few days a year that it is too hot even with the doors open, he will be able to sit in the garden.

I'd be more concerned about the period from late October to late February when it will be too cold unless he spends a fortune heating it, but then, he might be wealthy enough to do that.

Thank you for all your replies.

First chap came last night. Looking at more of an Orangery design, 1 solid wall, then dwarf wall and 3 brick pillars to front, 2 pillars to side window plus French door. Typical conservatory roof. All glass top spec. Also going to quote for pitched tilled roof with 2 x velux windows in, but reckons tilled roof will add £5k.

2nd chap from a local est 30 years firm coming tonight.

Chap last night said improvements in glass ment it could be used all year round if it had heating in, suggested 2 x dimplex heaters.

Did not give a price coming back next week.

A free standing conservatory not attached to the house with plants in?

    Most call them green houses.

I am in this boat , or will be soon , the house were buying has a rotten , wooden lean to attached , and rather cheekily called a conservatory, we have to rip it down as its not fit for purpose

My wife really wants a conservatory , as do i , because we will be lucky enough to have a garden that is really long and the house is elevated so theviews are good , across town and fields , when we were viewing houses , and we went to some that had conservatorys in with tiny gardens , it just seemed a bit pointless , whats the point of creating a room that takes up most of the garden , your better off with the extra garden space i would have thought.....?

Anyhow , we think that if you accept that it will be a bit nippy in the deep of winter and a bit hot in the heat of summer , then playing with figures and spec shoudl enable you to get something useable

    no ?

They all say that. We were told that when we had ours built 5 years ago and it simply isn't true. Fortunately, we didn't need the extra space and are happy to use it as and when the temperature permits which is usually March to early October (except this year when we had a particularly cold spring). If you are prepared to spend a fortune heating it, then fine, but otherwise if you want a space that you can use in winter, I wouldn't get a conservatory.

But it isn't just the deep of winter. It is cold any time of the year when there is no sun. You only need a few minutes sun to warm it up, but if it is overcast then it won't get warm.
