Online Multiplayers and Your Internet Connection

What would be the required minimum internet connection to be able to play online ps3 / xbox games, for these games to always run reliably and smoothly without any lag?
For example i have 6mb download, 0.6 upload, and 55 ping
The main games i play online are the call of duty ones on the ps3. Ive not noticed any problems but just wondered if the games would be any better for example if i had fibre broadband? Or would it not make any difference

I think the reconmended speed is around 2mb for online gaming.
Personally I have a 60mb fibre optic connection, but that's because I upload a lot of HD videos, and I got sick of them taking 12 hours. If you don't notice any problems already, then you wont really notice a faster connection. It's pretty much works, or doesn't work, and yours works.0 -
I prefer using the fastest connection I can but only simply because of the lag that can ensue if you run around too fast.
You also end up getting lag due to other players I find but the more you can get the better, 2mb is just about sufficient right now.
I wouldn't bother too much about the ping, it only conveys how many connections from your system to the server and bounces up and more more often than a diarhetic kangaroo
It is impossible to say how your performance would be affected, you could buy 20mbs virgin but still be stuck with bad lag due to many factors, not least how many people share your cable (forgot the word for substation)
I have 20mbs Virgin and it flies liek the clappers, but I still occasionally find myself lagging on Diablo 3 sometimes."Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast. Faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. Good Luck" - The Doctor.0 -
For games that hold most of the information and players on a remote server then your ping is crucial, Ping tells you how fast your connection is to the server. Lower ping means every piece of information you send or receive is quicker so everything is actedon quicker.
If for example you are playing on the PS3 which may mean YOU may become the server then the amount of up and down speed can effect gameplay as you have to be able to send and receive every other players data as well as your own.
In reality all of the combinations of ping, Upload and download speed have an impact on your playing experience and of course the faster the better so there is no ideal speed to "always run reliably and smoothly" you can only do the best you can with what you have, Sorry.
Of course after gaming for 30+ years im just glad im not still on dial up0 -
I always wondered how that all works - how does it pick who is "hosting" the game?Hi. I'm a Board Guide on the Gaming, Consumer Rights, Ebay and Praise/Vent boards. It generally picks those with the quickest connections. Quick ping in the lobby and you've got your host.0

Right ok, so when my upstairs neighbours unplug the WiFi to vacuum they're potentially ruining the game for the other team too? (providing I'm the host)
That's good to know

Not sure why your neighbour unplugging their WiFi would affect anyone's game? Unless you're stealing their internetzzz!! lol0

that happened to me before, but i was using my neighbours public hotspot.
For online gaming, its more about the latency than the amount of bandwidth.
Games dont tend to use alot of data.
Increasing the broadband speed doesn't always reduce the latency and some slower connections can sometimes be quicker in games than faster ones0 -
I'm using their Internet but they're my landlord and they let me use itHi. I'm a Board Guide on the Gaming, Consumer Rights, Ebay and Praise/Vent boards.
