Juice Fasting?

I've had this juicer for about 10 months (I paid £99.99), still going strong. Had a lovely carrot, apple and orange juice last night.

I do agree it's good to see people thinking of their health but cutting out whole food groups is taking it too far in my opinion.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
My health and wellbeing has improved since I took the approach of the paleo diet - not the whole thing but the approach of clean eating and avoiding processed foods. But I'll happily have dairy and don't think there's anything wrong with potatoes in their form just out of the ground, or rice. I feel healthier, for sure in my digestive system.
It does seem to be for most looking for quick results for whatever it is they want to achieve, however for a short time I agree it might be worth giving it a shot to see how it makes you feel. NOT 60 days though!
A good idea in principle, but do you drink milk straight from the cow or potatoes straight from the ground? Almost everything you buy nowadays, has been processed, and it's this which makes me contemplate a healthier food lifestyle, as i am able to acquire foods which haven't been processed, covered with insecticide, etc.
Take rice for instance. You think rice is healthy?
Maybe if you eat unprocessed rice, but most of the rice we buy has been processed, to increase shelf life? This processing destroys most of the nutrients, and although nutrients are readded, white rice, in particular, is simply a refined starch which is largely bereft of its original nutrients.

There's also evidence to suggest many of our foodstuffs contain varying quantities of arsenic, particularly in rice.

I think it's naive to not question what is in all of our food and drink, across the board. I can't think of a single item which hasn't been treated, sprayed, injected, processed, etc
Like i said previously, i've never been on a diet, i've never had the need, but over the years i've been questioning more and more, what i eat, and i've already made a substantial change to my attitude to food and diet, and although there will be many cynics, (as there are about anything different from the norm,) i'm putting a great deal of thought and research into what i am doing, and ultimately, it's my choice.
Incidentally, i know a family who have lived by a similar way of eating, fruit, veg, nuts, pulses, lentils, for some 30-40 years now, and looking at other blogs, this food lifestyle obviously suits some people?
I must admit, 30 years ago, i too, thought they were strange.Fred - Where's your get up and go?

I too saw the TV programme and my interest was piqued not so much by the weightloss aspect (although I could really do with losing some weight) but the claims of regain of energy. I have been suffering lately from apathy and sluggishness, so much so that I struggle to get through my working day. At the moment I am obsessed with regaining my energy again and have decided to give this a go - starting with a 5-day juice fast at first to test the waters, and hopefully go on. I have seen the comments on this thread advising against juicing but to be honest I eat quite unhealthily at the present time so, as far as I am concerned, any change I make would be for the better.
I already have a Breville JE15 juicer (bought a few years ago and, thankfully kept), a blender, and several juice recipe sources - what I am trying to work out now is how to get the more produce for my money - as I am on a quite a low income. I also don't want to be spending my days lugging heavy bags of veg and fruit home from the supermarket. I see Abel and Cole do Juicing Boxes but I doubt this is the optimum cost option for me (£16.50 for 7kg - and am not quite clear how long this would last me) so am presently trying to educate myself on low-cost options. Any advice on this would be appreciated.
Anyhoo... just wanted to post here to let you know you are not the only one having a go at this
Hi isabelle304. I was definitely beginning to feel outnumbered here. :rotfl:
The energising aspect is definitely a huge attraction.
I have decided to juice as i go (literally,) as fresh is best? and probably get my produce on a daily or two daily basis, but it's not a problem for me.
Do you have any ethnic markets in your area? that's a good place to go. I don't anticipate this being expensive, and a healthy way to eat for even those on a low budget? I shall document how much i spend.Fred - Where's your get up and go?

In an ideal world fredandwilma, yeah it would be better to get all your food straight from the cow/ground etc. I love going abroad away from the tourist traps and eating like the locals do as you just know it's 'clean'. I too have never been on a diet, although as I've said the principles I use come from paleo diet it is only that, a change in my eating habits..
Some interesting links there, thanks!0 -

Is it low fat, low sugar, low refined carbs?
Lots of veg, salad, medium amounts of fruit & low fat protein?0 -

Ah, the paleo diet, more suited to me, here in my cave?
Seriously, the food industry is so geared to us consumers? How we are supposed to want things to look and taste (not,) and shelf life?
Look at how much money and effort S - bugs are investing in bioscience study into cultivated strawberries, in their quest for the perfect strawberry, and for all year round strawberries?
What is the perfect strawberry? I know my interpretation of a perfect strawberry, and i definitely wouldn't buy it from a supermarket.
I should add, i definitely don't want a "cultivated" strawberry.

Anyway, back to my quest for a juicer. I looked at a blender yesterday. I'm not convinced.
I will definitely buy a juicer this week.
Oh yesFred - Where's your get up and go?

I now have my multi tasking mean machine.
After discovering all retail outlets including online, have sold out of many blenders and juicers, (i wonder why?) i discovered a machine which does everything i want it to, literally, (that's what it says in the instructions,) but had to physically go and collect my wonder machine. Either everyone has watched THAT programme, or everyone has decided to make smoothies in the hot weather. Or both.
I've bought a version of the magic bullet, i've no idea how it performs, but i can guarantee if it doesn't perform, it's going straight back to the shop for a refund, so i'm not too worried. It's supposed to mix, chop, blend, whip, grind, puree, juice and grate. Most importantly, it also crushes ice. It was only £19.99 and i guess you probably gets what you pays for?
I'll reserve judgement until i've tried the "magic" machine. I've got masses of strawberries to use, along with (hopefully,) crushed ice, before i start my mean green juice regime.
Wish me luck?Fred - Where's your get up and go?

Good luck!
Thanks SandC. I'm going to need it, especially when it comes to working out how to use my mean magic machine? I shall attempt to make a strawberry iced drink today, made with the remainder of my strawberries. I may be some time? I'm just using the remainder of my fresh fruit and veg (waste not, want not.) My target is to start my mean green juice routine on friday. Surprisingly i think what i shall miss the most is eating fresh fruit.
My thanks to all who have contributed info so far re juicers, blenders, also the links to blogs, recipes etc. It's all helped with my decision making, being a total kitchen gadget novice, (which probably shows with my purchase of the magic machine?) Only time will tell. It better had be magic, that's all i can say.Fred - Where's your get up and go?

Am hot on your heels as I've just found out I got paid early this month (did not expect to get any money till later this week) :T so am going shopping later on this evening (just before supermarkets close - ie more chances of getting reduced produce) to stock up on fruit and veg and will start juicing straightaway tonight. At the weekend, I took my juicer out of the depths of the cupboards and gave it a good rinse
I take it you have had a look at the Reboot With Joe website and the juice recipes there?
Let us know how you get on with the Magic Bullet. While I was cleaning out my juicer, I did wonder whether it will be up to the heavy use I am going to inflict on it (3-5 times a day for a long period of time) ... but only time will tell if the little beast is tough enoughI'll be using a blender for stuff like soft fruit (bananas, berries, avocado) and for crushing ice - and a citrus press for .... citrus fruit! (well duh!).
What I need to start working out is how I am going to prepare my juices in advance (ie for the next day) as I need to take them to work with me. I'll probably be transporting them in Kilner jars as I already have a load of them.
Really looking forward to getting started - the weather's been so hot lately - perfect conditions for drinking lots of juice!0 -

Already tried and tested. I'm impressed but then my expectations were zilch. How long it will last is another matter.isabelle304 wrote: »What I need to start working out is how I am going to prepare my juices in advance (ie for the next day) as I need to take them to work with me. Do you have a kitchen at work? Then you could prepare them as required if it's possible to transport your juicer?isabelle304 wrote: »Really looking forward to getting started - the weather's been so hot lately - perfect conditions for drinking lots of juice!
So am i. I'm definitely in the right frame of mind for sticking with this. All positive, right now. I'm especially looking forward to feeling energised.
Well, the mean machine performed and despite all the parts in the box, it's remarkably easy to assemble and use. And clean. All it takes is reading the instructions for 10 mins. :rotfl:
It takes up no space at all in the kitchen and easily transportable. So far i'm impressed, although i've yet to try the juicer. I'm interested to observe mean machines grating skills, but i've nothing to grate. All that cheese i've hand grated, in the past.
I've had a strawberry frozen margarita, (minus margarita and tequila.)Made in no time at all. Mean machine also comes with four party glasses. Anyone for a drink?
I feel healthier already.Fred - Where's your get up and go?
Barney - It just got up and went.
