I just discovered my new credit card (tarting) has given me a credit limit of £2500 - only balance transferred £600! My online bank, always in credit except for emergencies, says I have £2000 available above my balance. My old credit card is still active until I finish paying the small balance, with a limit of £1000.

All in all I could go on a huge spending spree of about £5000! Not even counting the loans we're offered on a regular basis!

We had our fingers burned just enough to know not to go down the debt route and have mostly lived within our means for several years.

Scary how easy it is to borrow!

  • I have no over draft and too poor a credit rating to be offered any other credit!

The only credit I have available is a catalogue for appx 2k. Have far too much debt to want more credit!

But agree with the general feeling that its way too easy to have more debt offered to you, we don't call them loans in our house but offers of debt.....
    :hello:
  • well now nothing... but when i had all my credit cards/overdrafts/catalouges... about £1,900.00... too much  now they are all closed though :T

Up to last week I could easily have accessed well over a years salary in available credit. I phoned to cancel one card last week (paid off Yaaayyyy!) and to reduce the credit limit on another by £6.5K as they had just kept upping the limit till it got to £11.5K :( On the same evening I applied online for a M&S More card and was accepted straight away, I'm awaiting notification of the credit limit but I'm anticipating around £5K. I still owe £6K to Capital One, with a limit of £12K, and have an agreed overdraft limit of £650 (which I never use now, but used to be very close to prior to LBM.)
Scary that they just keep wanting to throw credit at me, but I suppose I am their ideal target, I have an excellent credit rating, have been with the same bank and employer for 20 odd years, never miss a payment and have been engaged in revolving credit for over 30 years. I guess they think they'll make money out of me. (cue evil laugh: Mwah haaa haaa, not now I log on daily to MoneySavingExpert.com....)

Edit to add: New M&S card arrived yesterday, with a limit of £6K, and I forgot to mention my Next credit limit of £3.6K

I'm almost ashamed to admit that one of my husbands credit cards has a limit of £16,700! Of course it's an MBNA card soon to be destroyed...

Several years ago my wife and I had a radical lifestyle change and our joint salary dropped by over 50%. At that time we somehow had credit card limits which totalled three times our yearly income. So we had mortgage type multiples available on cards. Thankfully, we were never tempted to get into any sort of unmanageable debt and we now have very little credit.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
As with andyboyo, I had my mortgage previously with One account, I switched four years ago(!) yet up until January this year - the £120,000 mortgage was still officially a "facility" so I could have withdrawn the lot!!!

However, now i have been discovered  and I have paid off and cancelled the majority of cards, I could tomorrow spend £22250!

    But, I won't!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
