  • Oh my dearest rtandon - you are always so kind and supportive of my efforts. And how do I repay you? By being nothing but a 'one trick pony' fraudster :( I'm afraid that I have made 'neep naans' before, during our Saturday Night is Strictly Curry Murray adventures... the post ishere to prove I'm no culinary adventurerer....:( Pippi, meanwhile is doing wonderful things, surfing USA, on the culinary highroad of sushi-ness :D Neeps seem a little pedestrian in comparison :( ..... :rotfl:

  • Couldn't watch the documentary GP. Far too sensitive at the moment. Sobbed my heart out at a video of an Argentinian little boy getting a chopping board as a gift and being so thankful, then when he got the present his parents had saved up for, he went wide eyed in shock, couldn't even look at the present, burst into tears and sobbed on his mumma for an age, thanking her over and over. A tablet of the SingingSam variety. I bought one on a whim a while ago this year and gave it back after 3 months. Careless and thoughtless purchase, versus scrimping and saving to provide a little boy with something extraordinary in his world. Sometimes I am ashamed to be me. Then I see black friday violence videos plastered everywhere and instead am ashamed to be British/mini-Americans as we are. Still reminders like this make me donate more to the Trussel Trust ;) they have a Christmas shoebox scheme going on for kids in the UK :)

I made (scuse the meat) tandoori chicken tonight GP. Tandoori spices, lemon juice, greek yoghurt and a touch of oil, marinaded all day, baked in the oven then quickly grilled for the blackened bubbling top/ Beautiful! Thank you Mr L for the tub of authentic tandoori spice to cheat with at 89p for 4-5 batches!

Last year I fundraised and the funds bought a cow for family in Ethiopia PLUS text books for a heir local school. So the gifts will go on giving for a long time. I'm ashamed of the western disdain for education when so many children in so called third world countries go to such lengths to get to school and those schools are so ill equipped
What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?

    Good Morning :hello:

Happy St Andrew's Day to all chums north of the Border :D

Ahh, we've had a lie-in this morning. It was absolutely wonderful, I slept right through. Such a treat!

I hear you Lilty on the shame of the 'black friday' shenanigans. Shame indeed. The thing is, I'm convinced by showing this behaviour of a 'few' it will just encourage more people to behave like this, year on year. I agree, if American sneezes, we appear to catch a cold. And yet, and yet...... having lived for a short period of time in the States, I know that there are oodles of good people there. People who actually have a whole heap of higher moral and ethical standards than some Brits. However, all we ever see, on TV is the clamour at the sales - anyone remember 'cab-bage patch dollies? The common denominator is not that we are becoming more 'american' the common denominator is our media choses to show this to us - both sides of the pond. To tell us 'everyone' is doing it. To make us feel that we are missing out and we must 'join in'. When in fact, the only thing to do is step back. DP ventured into B&m yesterday, and reported that it was heaving - according to the lady on the till, the toy dept was 'rammed' (her phrase). I don't know whether they were having a sale, or whether it was simply the last payday before Christmas. So retail fever is alive and kicking where I live, as anywhere else. The good thing about yesterday? Whilst out in the car, we encountered several people who 'gave way' to us and made our passage around easier - including one taxi driver  Do you know what happened then? When DP had the chance to let people out or into the queue - he did so. Contagion exists everywhere ;) It's just you don't get to hear about most of it..........

I wasn't aware that the TT shoe-box scheme was for UK children? I thought that this was for their work elsewhere in the EU?

satchmo - so true. Memorygirl assisted one of the girls in the matrix to fund-raise for an African school they had connections with. I was happy to contribute to this fundraiser, as it was 'practical stuff'; pens, pencils, exercise books, underwear and a school book bag. I know that Beanie contributed to it as well. Practical things that you know are so highly valued, and yet, which literally cost 'pennies' (comparatively) in this country.

Upsidedown Bear - martinis again? Before 8am :T... :rotfl:

Dinner last night was nice - just a little bit time consuming to make from scratch after we'd got back. And there is little incentive to be in a stone cold kitchen, when DP has the log-burner going in the sitting room :( :rotfl: Tis' a good job that I like cooking :D

    Anyway, it worked out alright. I made Jaymee O's Kerelan Veggie Curry I had got plans to make the accompaniments - this is the one where he did the poppadums in the microwave, but it turned out I couldn't be bothered to use anymore of the shopping budget on poppadums, so we'll try that experiment another day. And besides which, I get to trot out me 'neep naans' again, which is absolutely no hardship :D I love how they are savoury and sweet at the same time. All I did was to grate Swedish turnip, fry it up with some red onion, add a few spices and pop it into Jaymee O's piadina dough. Shape vaguely into a naan shape and fry until golden on both sides. Serve with the curry and a little boiled basmati rice;

Right, well we've plenty to get on with today, and the weather is looking good.

We've a few days holiday coming up, so if my appearances get intermittent, that will be the reason. I've not gone orf in a huff nor nothing.

Thanks everso for popping by, reading and starting stimulating discussion. You know how much I appreciate it :D

    See y'all later.

  • Shenanigans indeed - less said about Black Friday the better - Chris Evans said to someone on the radio yesterday 'is it a real thing' and I thought exactly the same. And yes, it seems that behind the wheel some people are.... - well..... less said. I try to let people out, sometimes it goes wrong and we end up not knowing who is going to go, so I try to make sure I can see that they have room to pull out etc. But my DB is a dreadful backseat driver 'don't let them in...' why ever not - even if someone's pushing through I let them - they've either made a dippy mistake (and who hasn't at some time) or they aren't very nice and I let them get out of my space. Do I feel as if I've lost, no why should I - but clearly to some people it feels like a personal affront. Doh! They clearly haven't enough else to worry about.

Just wanted to pop in with my tuppence worth GP. Thanks for the thought provocation. :rotfl:

GP your dinner looks lush! I've been waxing lyrical to OH about the creative use of a neep (which to me is more exotic than sushi:rotfl:) Have asked him to try and replicate your dinner - his answer was to point out that Mrs Murry is no longer in the running!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

  • In addition to being St Andrew's Day, today is also the first Sunday in Advent. I have to say, I'm not too sure how this leaves you in the 'opening up the advent calendar' stakes, as I thought there were only ever 24 'windows' on them things? :D

Looking at advent purely in an 'interested' manner, ascribing to no one particular faith, I was interested to learn a few years ago, that the 4 Sunday's in Advent have 'themes' attached to them. Now, this may be to give the preacher a hook on which to hang their sermon, or it may have some much more fundamental meaning - I'm not sure. But I have to say, in the melee of candy canes, cartoon character calendar 'must haves' and cheap chocolate, this fact had rather passed me by.

The first Sunday of advent is associated with hope - apparently.

I had been cogitating on this whole retail frenzy nonsense, when I came across something on Heidi's blog (101 cookbooks). Although it is ostensibly a book review about billionaires and their motivations, the piece starts with a story. I think that the message may well be that we can always hope for the best, hope for change, hope that people will see the error of their ways..... If you've a spare couple of minutes, and would care to take a read, the actual 'story' is only 4 paragraphs long (up to the illustration), if you'd like to read the whole book review, that is an interesting read, but a little bit longer......
